I need to upgrade my in-laws' pc with a new modem. They currently have a 300mhz computer with a 14.4 modem. Should I buy the cheap win modem style modem or the old fashion modem with on-board processor (or mem)?

Don't buy a winmodem.
Your best bet is an external serial (Diamond Supra Express is the first choice).
Second best is a standard ISA internal, but make sure it's NOT a winmodem/softmodem.

I'm still using a Diamond Supra Express 56i (internal ISA) and have been very pleased with its performance. Good download speeds and works well in games too. HTH

Bought and installed one

I bought a Zoom V.92 modem. I installed it and at first, I couldn't get the internet to connect. The phone dialed up but would not connect. After speaking with there AWESOME tech support (no joke) the guy gave me a text string to enter to override the default connect settings and I was up and running. I would suggest if anyone is buying a product, check to see if Zoom has the product your looking for.

The text string was added to override the V.92 connection and make it into a V.90 connection. The ISP I was dialing had not upgraded their system yet for the V.92.

My new USR v.92 is backward compatible to v.90 and doesn't require any disabling. They still do a few things right.
