If the sound card is sharing IRQ with the video card, you may have problems. Don't use the first PCI slot (next to the AGP slot) for anything - that slot shares IRQ with the AGP.

Question

What motherboard/chipset do you have? This might be the cause of your problems.

What driver version are you using for your MX? If you are using the newer ones there seem to be a lot of issues with VIA MVP3 chipsets. The MX works fine on this board as long as you stay at driver version 6.26 or earlier. Anything from 6.31 and newer seems to cause many problems. For a very in depth discussion on this very issue you may want to do a search at the amdzone forums. They have discussed this at great length.

Just becuase you checked a bunch of times and saw no conflicts in device manager doesn't mean there isn't some underlying problem with your IRQs. Try moving the SB Live card to another PCI slot. This sounds like a classic case of resources conflicting (as glc was hinting at) and maybe device manager just isn't reflecting it. Also, have you installed the 4 in 1 drivers from VIA? If not that is a very likely culprit.

They may very well be *sharing* IRQ, and will not flag you with a conflict. Let's rephrase this - are the video card and the sound card using the same IRQ?

The user's manual for that particular motherboard suggests that AGP 2X is an available setting in the BIOS. Do you in fact have it set at 2X? If you do, have you tried using this card in AGP 1X mode? Might be worth a try.

Another thing to try would be to start your system in Safe Mode and enter device manager. Remove all items under "display adapter" and restart your system. Install the latest drivers for your card and then restart the system again.

I noticed you said the NVidia "Generic" Drivers gave you problems, but actually they should work as good as the Hercules drivers do, if not better (since they are updated much more frequently and undoubtedly take advantage of newer technology). Give the Detonator 3 10.80 drivers a try and see where that gets you.

Also, for anyone interested, the Cntrl-Alt-Del web site has almost all the Detonator 3 drivers known to man. Enjoy!
