At Work we upgraded our computers from 512 (400) MB ram to a GIG today.
I installed the 2 sticks and after restart I checked to see if it installed properly in task manger under Memory. Everything was fine. BUT! So far I have had a little problem. 2x this afternoon the computer has totaly froze. I mean the 3 finger salute (CTRL+ALT+DEL) did'nt even work. I hit the power button and that did'nt even work. I had to restart the computer by flicking the switch on and off the Power Supply. So far so good. Any Suggestions on what could be causing this?

Even though it said it was installed correctly in device manager, just make sure you in fat have the RAM installed properly, like the module is pushe din the whole way. This could be causeing your problem as I had a similar problem, after installing memory modules in my computer. Also you could try keeping one stick in at a time, and if you get the problem with one stick in and noh the other, RMA it.

Since you only show one hdd in your 'work computer' I'll assume no Raid. You need to disable Raid in the bios to rid yourself of the yellow ? The bigger problem is the crash after adding the memory. Are the specs/manufacturer of the two sticks the same? In order to run Dual Channel, they should be identical. You may want to run Memtest86 from a boot floppy and test the memory to see if maybe you added a defective stick. Or the two may just me incompatible.

Hmmmmm...a problem with the RAID controller, but you aren't running HDD's in RAID? That's weird. It shouldn't have naythign to do with your RAM, although it might.
**edit Panama that's the second time you beat me out today...lol... |

You can have a compatibility issue. Maybe Windows doesn't like your modules. That's happened to me more than once. The computer recognizes the modules, but it won't run in Windows XP.

Well I installed the RAID controller any way. The other people in the office had it installed with a single HD and I did'nt. So it was the only difference I've seen in comparisons with their computers which don't freeze.
If it does freeze again I'm going to try the one stick at a time method. I'll keep you guys posted. thanks for the help. |

Terribly sorry for bringing up a somewhat dead thread. (hey that rhymed)
Anyway I tried each mem module individually. Same thing both locked up my system. So its probably corrupt or a compatibility issue. Just thought providing an update might help someone else. |
