partition wierdness

hi, was cleaning out some hd space the other day, and i needed partition magic for a few seconds, when i opend it, i noticed something strange;
my second hd is divided in two, one primary partition, and one extended.
the extendend partition on my second hd contains one logical partition.
this logical partition is according to partion magic 8.0 16 Gb in size
the funny thing is this; it has 6.6 Gb used and 3.6Gb unused space.
windows also thinks it's only a 10 gig
i've scanned for errors using windows tools and found none, and when i try o use partition-magic's scan option it claims there is a file open on the drive ( i am not running anny programs off that partition)
i'll have a look at fixing this later (i am verry bussy with my work right now) but does annyone have anny idea what this could be

oh yhea i am runnning win2k

Is is causing any problems? It could be just that the calculations are incorrect and you still have the 16GB... as long as you're not running out of room I wouldn't worry about it. Unless for some reason you needed to know the exact amount on the drive.

it's not that i need it, but i would like to know what is going on. i managed to spread it out over other partitions and its still only saying 10 gig.

it's rater a question af curiousity (and maybee pride ) rather then "fixing the problem cause it needs fixing"

Is this a prebuilt system, like HP or Dell? Often times they use a separate partition as a restore partition. Maybe that's what this is. If it is and you've never copied that info to CD's or DVD's as backup for your system, I'd recommend you do so. In the event of hard drive failure a recovery partition becomes useless.

nope all my own build, i just never noticed it before cause it's a partition of the space that was left and i only use it for temporarily dumping files into before i store them in a propper location ( sort of an in-box, or an ellis island for files if you know what i mean)

Maybe PARTINFO will tell you more about what's going on - if you can't find it in your Partition Magic distribution you can download it here:
