Im installing a DVD RW on my P4 2g computer where theres already a CD rom drive in it in short adding another drive . When I go to system I can see both drives but under properties the letters are the same and the DVD wont function. How can I designate a letter for the DVD? My CD rom is set as master and DVD in slave. Im using win98 and the driver is installed already.

![]() Are you using a 40-line cable or 80-line cable? Try putting the DVD drive as master. They tend to like that better.

What brand and model is the DVD burner? I've come across Sony DVD burners that don't work on 80 wire IDE cables, only 40 wire.

Its a 40 pin BenQ dvd/rw and I use one ribbon cable to connect both drives to my IDE 2. My IDE 1 is my hard drive. BIOS recognizes it wen I boot up and when I go to Device Manager both drives appear but have the same letter designation when I go to Drive Settings. The target id is 0 for the dvd/rw and 1 for the cd/rom. If I go to My Computer I can only see the master drive which is my dvd/rw. Any more thoughts?

can you see both drives in Disk Management (control panel -> administrative tools -> Disk Management). if you can, just assign a new drive letter in there.

Cant change the current drive assignment when I try to.. But the start and end drive for the dvd is empty and wont accept any other letters except the ones similar to the cd/rom drive.

Try this. Change the jumpers to Cable Select on both drives and see if that corrects the problem. If not, go to Device Manager and Remove the last drive added. Reboot and let Windows find it again and reassign a letter. If neither of these ideas work, try a different cable. Still no go, switch the jumpers back again to master/slave and remove both drives in device manager and reboot. Keep us posted on your progress.

Thanks for all the help guys, I got it going. The problem was when I previously installed the operating system I loaded the CD driver in DOS then I loaded Windows. It somehow created a problem when I added another drive.
So what I did was reformat my hard drive since I want to clean up my drive from these unwanted pop ups...got infected from downloading freewares, then loaded the OS. |
