lite-on makes a decent dvd burner, but the software bundle is a little weak. plextor is probably one of the best ones on the market right now. the new model is the 712A, and from what i've heard its pretty good. the 708A is the one magazines have been raving about for a while now, and the price has fallen a bit since the 712 came out.

I have a Pioneer and have used them in builds for other people as well. No problems whatsoever.

The Lite-On 832S I just installed for a customer came with Nero Express 6.3 - hardly a weak software package.

I'd go with LiteOn, NEC or LG right now, coz they are the only companies who have dual layer DVD burners, and these 3 are good brands, too.

Plextore, NEC, Lite-On, LG, Pioneer... All good brands. I personally am sold on Plextor and I'm waiting for them to release a dual layer burner but all the others I listed make very good burners too.

There is no regular Lite On DVD burner. The newest model can do dual layer, the older models can't.

That is a dual *format* burner (Plus and minus), but not a dual *layer* burner. A dual layer burner can use dual layer media for around 9gb on a single DVD. Single layer is 4.7gb. Dual layer burners can use single layer media too.

Quite true.

However, when i was researching which burner to buy for myself two months ago that model wasn't on the market yet. as far as i could tell the lite-on and plextor burners were both great performers, but the plextor came with a thirty dollar rebate and a better software bundle. sounds like lite-on has upped the ante with their new dual layer burner.
