Fixing a cd drive unwilling to open properly

I want to add an extra cd rom drive onto my PC (this isn't the same with the other drive that I messed up earlier and fixed)

The problem with the cd drive is, the fact that it won't open properly, as if the gears are messed up or something inside. I've open the cdrom shell and have taken a look...the gears are fine and there doesn't seem to be any problems, but maybe something with the gears required to open the disc drive properly have been altered.

I'm trying to look for a solution maybe to adjust the gears manually, if something had occured to alter the position of the gears inside (the plastic gears that rotate).

Information: All I know is that it reads at 42X

Thanks

Normally, once that kind of problem starts you really can't do much about it. It's easier to just buy another CD-ROM drive.

If this CD-ROM drive is new, go back to the place you bought it and exchange it for a new one.

I hope you didn't void the warranty by opening it...

You can get a new CD rom for $18 without freight or better yet a DVD rom for $26. Not worth the time and trouble to try to fix it. If it is under warranty, it might not even be worth it to pay the freight for the return.

Yep. It's been voided. Most CD drives have some sort of seal or sticker on one or both sides that are split when the cover is removed.

You can either play around with it, or buy a new one. I've reparied quite a few drives by doing this, however, in your case, it would probably just be easier to fork over the $18 or $26.

Thumbs up

Well, I really was in the mood to try and fix it, learn more about the mechanics with computer hardware, and I did...so, thanks for the info and stuff, I got it working.
