HP OfficeJet printer troubles

Hey all, we have this old HP Officejet printer that is currently connected to a Dell laptop advanced port replicator (through the parallel port), and everytime we try to print something, it tells us the printer is out of paper. So we tried connecting it to the laptop (Dell Inspirion 8500) directly, and it printed just fine. We sent the port replicator into Dell, Dell sent us a new one, and it worked...for a few days, then stopped again giving the same error that the printer was out of paper. Any suggestions on what to try next?
