Sata HD Drivers
Hi-
I am trying to install windows XP - OEM onto the HD of a new build. However when I boot up the system, and when I try to install windows, the hard drive is not found. By the way the HD is a Seagate 80GB Sata HD. In reading other threads, it has come to my understanding that I need to install drivers to get it to recognize the drive. I think I can get these drivers from a CD that came with my mobo (Asus K8V Se Deluxe) but I am not sure which things I need off the CD. I will not be using RAID. I just want my system to see the drive so I can install Windows. I also read that I will need to take the drivers (or whatever files I need) and put them on a floppy, then when I try to install windows, at some point in the beginning I should hit the F6 key. Is this correct? Also, to create the floppy, do I just copy and paste all the files I need from the CD to the floppy, or do I need to do something else to get this floppy disk to work. I'm just very confused about all of this (my thinking was that I could just plug this HD into my new build, and it would work). Finally, would I be better off switching to another type of drive (other than SATA) to make things easier on myself? Please help me understand this so I can get this build to work. Thanks. Here is what is on the mobo CD: File list for the included support software for K8V Series motherboard =========================================================================== File Name Description --------------------------------------------------------------------------- --Drivers -AMD -AMD Cool'n'Quiet Driver -Win2K_ME -AMD Cool'n'Quiet Driver package revision 1.0.1.7 for Windows 98/ME/2000. -WinXP -AMD Cool'n'Quiet Driver package revision 1.1.0.0 for Windows XP. -Audio -AD1980 -SoundMAX Audio Driver version 5.12.01.3663 WHQL.(98SE/ME/2000/XP/2003) -AD1985 -SoundMAX Audio WHQL Driver version 5.12.1.3713.(98SE/ME/2000/XP/2003) -ALC655 -Realtek ALC655 AC'97 Audio Driver.(98SE/ME/2000/XP/2003) -Display -98_ME -VIA/S3G graphics K8M800/K8N800 Win9x/ME Display Driver 4.14.10.0033 -2K_XP -VIA/S3G graphics K8M800/K8N800 WinXP/2K Display Driver 6.14.10.0089 -Lan -3Com -3Com Gigabit LOM (3C940) Driver V1.0.0.46 WHQL for Windows 2000/XP/2003 & V1.0.0.44 for Windows NT4/98/ME. -Marvell -Marvell LAN Driver V6.31 WHQL for Windows 98/ME, V6.30 WHQL for Windows 2000/XP/NT, V.6.27.0.0 WHQL for Windows 2003. -VT8201 -VIA Rhine Family Fast Ethernet Adapter Driver. -Promise -378RAID -FastTrak 376/378 Driver. -nt4 -Windows NT4 miniport driver 1.00.1.37. -win2000 -Windows 2000 miniport driver 1.00.1.37 WHQL. -98-me -Windows 98-ME miniport driver 1.00.1.37. -winxp -Windows XP miniport driver 1.00.1.37 WHQL. -win2003 -Windows 2003 miniport driver 1.00.1.37 WHQL. -MakeDisk -Make Promise RAID driver floppy for Windows NT4/2000/XP/2003. -378ATA -Promise SATA378 Driver V1.00.0.16. -MakeDisk -Make Promise SATA driver floppy for Windows NT4/2000/XP. -Linux -PROMISE 20378 Driver for RedHat 7.3 & 8.0 and SuSE 8.0 & 8.1. -Netware -Netware5.1/6.0 Promise FastTrak 378 Controller Driver. -PAM -Promise Array Management for Windows 2000/XP/2003. -USB2 -VIA USB 2.0 Host Controller Drivers V2.57 for Windows 98SE/ME. -VIA -4in1 -VIA 4 in 1 driver Package Service driver. -VIARAID -6420RAID -VIA VT6420 (VT8237) SATA RAID Driver Package Version 2.20D WHQL. --Software -Acrobat -Adobe Acrobat Reader V5.0. -AFUDOS -AFUDOS.txt -Information on how to use the AMI FLASH DOS Utility. -AFUDOS.exe -Utility v2.07 for update the motherboard's AMI BIOS. -AMD -ASUS Cool&Quiet Software for Windows ME/2000/XP. -ASUSUpdt -Setup.exe -ASUS Update V5.23.01 Install Program for Windows 95/98/ME/2000/XP/2003. -DirectX -Microsoft DirectX 8.1 Runtime library. -LOGO -Default Logo Bitmaps. -PCCillin -PC-Cillin 2002 (Anti-Virus) V9.05 Application. -English -English Version PC-Cillin 2002 Application. -TChinese -Traditional Chinese Version PC-Cillin 2002 Application. -Probe -Setup.exe -ASUS PC Probe V2.22.04 Install Program for Windows 95/98/ME/2000/XP/2003. -ScrnSavr -ASUS Features Screen Saver. -VEdit -Winbond Voice Editor. --FILELIST.TXT -This file you are now reading |

I think your answer is right here:
-MakeDisk -Make Promise SATA driver floppy for Windows NT4/2000/XP. That sounds like a utility to make the driver floppy. Try running that utility. |

I believe the only way is off a floppy. I believe a possible driver for i486's maybe at http://list.driverguide.com/list/company432/index.html (at the very bottom.)

When I set up Raid 1 on my Asus board (Intel) I used the Make Disk utility. I am not aware of any other way to do it. Then F6 during installation.
