Lightbulb Intel's Summer Plans

Hey,

Just wanted to give you all a heads up - Intel will massively cut prices on its current processors (socket 478) on August 22. If you are planning to buy an Intel P4/Celeron build, wait it out a few days

Sounds good, do you think this will have repercussions on other hardware? (i.e. Now obsolete DDR Ram).

AMD's still use DDR, even the new 64's and such, I believe (or I could be out of the ballpark, lmao). I doubt RAM prices will drop too much that soon. DDR2 should start to come down a little as it continues to mature.

If Intel get there way AMD will be out of business (Probably vice-versa as well.) I was thinking, because I want to get some more ram soon, and lower prices will help me on my way.

Thanks.

I doubt it - some of us have pretty stubborn choices when it comes to processors - like me, when I chose, I went with Intel without a doubt in mind. The only thing AMD seems to be doing now is requiring Socket 939 Athlon 64-FX series microprocessors to have ECC enabled RAM - something I'm sure many of us would rather live without

I meant that with all this new technology (that Intel backs/invents) it seems that Intel is trying make AMD to lag behind and so they can become supreme. AMD in there shoes would probably do the same.

kram, i'm almost certain that you don't need ECC ram for socket 939. I believe it is still recomended but you can do with out it. That was one of the main reasons to move to socket 939.

Did a little research - sorry about that mistake. I must have mixed it up with Socket 940...the predecessor, so to speak.

Does anyone know if the prices of older chips will drop as well? I'm looking to do a budget build with a 2.26 or 2.4GHz processor... thanks!

I believe they will cut prices across the board.

From what I have been reading, the price drops will be pretty substantial on the socket 478, and the prices of the socket "T" 775 will also come down quite a bit accordint to kram's link. The way it looks, the higher priced chips could drop a couple of hundred dollars. I can wait a week and a half for that.

AMD is only supporting standard DDR because they would have to redesign the core of the A64 to work with DDR2. remember, the A64 has an on-die memory controller, so DDR2 will not work with whats out right now. AMD wont go DDR2 until early next year with nForce4 and the 90nm manufacturing process.
