cpu and heatsink compound
I am going to build a new computer pretty soon and I was wondering how necessary the compound that you can put between the cpu and the heatsink is. Do I really need it? Or is it just a good precaution to have?

You must use some kind of interface, whether it is a pad or compund, overwise you would have overheating problems.

Normally when retail they have a pad. If the CPU comes retail just use what comes with it. I have tried pad's and paste both seem sufficient while the paste is better.
If your not pushing the system (OC'ing) and it is well ventilated you will have no issues when properly applied.

Do I have to ever replace the paste? Or is it just a one time thing?

No, its a one time thing. You shouldnt need to "replace" the paste.

If you ever remove the heatsink, you will have to clean off the thermal paste and apply a fresh layer.
