ok, how do i add sata hd?

well finally, after one month of frustration and. . . . first post
second post
third post
and thanks to the people at pcmech, i got my new comp goin. well, not entirely. . .i had to get my old hd out of my old comp, format it on the new comp, and then install win xp pro on there. it wasn't a complete success due to the fact that about 10 files couldn't be dl'ed, but xp is workin fine rite now, so no complaints. but now that i have win xp on here, i was hoping to connect the sata hd using win xp pro that i have on my old ide hd. well i have it initialized, but i can't do anything with it. under device manager > disk drives > it is detecting my old ide hd (with win xp on it) and my sata hd. what i want to do, is load win xp on my sata hd, how do i do that? under the volume tab of the properties of my sata hd (in device manager>disk drives), this is written:

Disk: Disk 1

Type: Dynamic

Status: Online

Partition Style: Master Boot Record [MRB]

capacity: 76316MB

unallocated space: 76317MB

reserved space: 0MB

oh, btw, it's a 80 GB hd, and it's shoing 76GB

any ideas as to how i can get my sata goin?

thanks

ps, i'll get the process by which i loaded win xp pro onto my old ide hd (it wasn't loading win xp the normal way either , but atleast by fidling around i got it to work, the sata hd on the other way, i couldn't get that to work at all) on here tomorrow nite so if anyone else has trouble loading it, they can refer to the post and hopefully load win xp succesfully

usually you wont get the full amount of disk space because the listed space is only theoretical space. also, im not quite sure what you wanna do. Do you want to install windows onto your 80 gb SATA HD so you can boot from there?

I think it shows 76GB because manufacturers label HDD according to the system that 1000MB=1GB, when in reality it is 1024MB=1GB. Please correct me if im wrong.

Go to configuration screen->system management->computer management->disk management. There you can click on the sata drive and see wheter it's been formatted properly. If not, you can do it there.

If you want to copy your winxp to the sata-drive, just use powerquest driveImage or Acronis trueImage, or other stuff like that and make a copy of your xp-partiton to your sata drive.

yea, i wanna move my win xp to the sata drive so that i can remove the ide hd, and boot from my sata hd. i couldn't do it via dos for some reason. i went into sytem management, and formated my hd, then i unhooked my ide hd, and tried to load win xp on ther like i did on my ide hd, but no luck . it needs a swap file, wht ever that is. and one more thing. . . . i wanted a full format of my old ide hd, but i still have the old partition. i mean on drive D (the partitioned drive), i still have the same files i used to have when i was using win ME on my old ide hd. how do i do a full format, destroy all data on the hd, not that im gonna do it again, but i jus wanna know, thanks . and where do i get powerquest, driveimage, etc.

if we copy xp, will it boot up from that drive? does the program (driveimage, truimage) copy the boot record also? is there anyother software that is cheap and performs the same function?

It seems like this is an awful lot of trouble to move the OS over to another hard disk instead of just installing on that disk to begin with. Even now that you have it installed on the IDE drive, you just got it installed, so you couldn't have done too much with the OS; might as well just reinstall.

I browsed through some of your previous posts... I don't think you ever explained if you got the XP cd's working, or how you installed XP but "10 files couldn't be downloaded."

If you got the XP CD's working, there should be no problem formatting the SATA drive and installing on it, but it won't just work automatically. You need to have the SATA device drivers loaded onto a floppy disk or other media so XP setup will detect it. Often, motherboards will come with the drivers on a floppy, or for updated ones, you can download them (usually a self-extract to floppy disk) from the motherboard manufacturer's website. Put the XP in the drive and boot from it, and as the system boots in to the DOS blue screens for install, a message at the bottom will tell you to press F6 if you need to install any third party drivers. Press F6 repeatedly until the message goes away. There won't be a response for a while, but after XP setup gets done loading some other drivers it will ask you what you want to install. Use the floppy and install the SATA drivers, and XP will recognize it.

oh thanks man, forgot about that, will go and try it at home today. the reason i havn't given the instruction yet is because i havn't had a chance to go back and finalize my procedure, don't want to put something up here and have it not work. but i'll put it up here anyways, and update it in the near future (HOPEFULLY):

- i needed two boot disks, the win 98 bootdisk, and the winxp bootdisk (got this site thanks to tigstah)
- i put in my win98 bootdisk in fdd, and the win xp pro cd in my cd rom. restarted my comp, went into bios, changed my frist boot device to cdrom, and saved and exit.
-it goes into dos. take out the win98 bootdisk, and put in the winxp boot disk, go into your cd rom drive (mine was i think E, and type in dir and go into the /i386 directory, and type in winnt.exe. it should install then.

i'll update the procedure once my dad get's here, he did most of the work, he's like an expert at dos.
