Advantages of dual channel RAM??

My mother board has the capability to have 2GB of dual RAM, or 3GB of non-dual RAM. What are the advantages of dual RAM? Are there any disadvantages to dual RAM? And will the 2GB of dual be faster and more effecient than 3GB of normal RAM??

From what I have heard, it's suppose to be a 20% performance increase. You basically double the bandwidth.

The only time 3GB of RAM would make any difference at all is if the programs and files you're working with will actually make use off that much RAM...and there aren't that many situations that will require even half that amount. If all you're doing is going on-line or playing 3D games, only about a third of the RAM will be used...the rest will just sit there taking up space. Don't worry about whether or not 3GB of RAM is better than 2GB...it's not that important and really doesn't improve system performance in a typical computer.

So it just makes more sense to have a gig and a half of RAM, instead of worrying about 2 to 3GB. Looks like that's what I'll do. And I'm assuming that 1.5GB of RAM is more than enough for just about any application, right?

What applications will you be using mostly?

If you're going to be doing stuff with PhotoShop, AutoCAD, or doing some video or audio editing, then it makes sense to pack the computer up with RAM.
