Sorry to double post but I wanted to extend thanks to all who have advised me in this situation. I am happy to announce PROBLEM SOLVED!

I used the 'q-flash' utility in my BIOS & manually updated the main BIOS & then immediately repeated the process for the backup BIOS. I then reset the machine & after 1 or 2 hiccups is starting up fine & showing me that is is now using BIOS version 'F4'. Even better, the CPU temps reported by my BIOS 'PC health' function are idling at around 39C!
That 'hmonitor' program I have is reporting an idle CPU temp of 54C however. Should I believe my BIOS (I want to) or this 'hmonitor' thing?

Glad you fixed it general lee. Trust me, the money invested in that new psu will be worth it. Though you will never see what might or could have happend you know that it wont.

Trust your bios over "hmonitor"

Thumbs up

I don't know of any Anti-virus stuff in BIOS.

Thanks again to everyone for all the help, it has been invaluable! I'm sure I will be initiating more threads soon to deal with my next problem.
