Question USB drive problem

I am not sure what is the problem, but I can open most of the USB flash drives. Then I tried a toshiba external DVD-rw which came with the laptop to open on with the pc, my pc hanged. Today I got my friends Usb drive, I cannot open it. I am using win xp. Specs as signature. What is the problem? The only way to cure this is by restarting the pc.
I use my hd with pc, macs everythin is ok. My friends, well I don't know if it is formatted using the mac or xp, or the software that came with it.
