2 questions about fans

1. In your [collective] experience, what are the quietest 80mm case fans? I have some generics that are decent but wondering if anyone knows for sure...

2. I've had great success with the Vantec Aeroflow in several [AMD] builds and see no reason to try a different fan, unless of course someone can recommend one that is much better...(also, if going with an Intel build, would a Vantec Aeroflow work well or is there something better?)

Thanks.

The Panaflo L1A is one of the quietest fans around, and its very high quality. Check it out: http://2cooltek.safeshopper.com/25/272.htm?391

I second Alaron56's recommendation of the Panaflo L1A's, they're all I use in my personal computers. But I've used Vantec Stealths and Zalman ZM-F1s in builds I do for others and these are nice quiet running fans too.

I will add another recommendation for the Panasonic Panaflo fans. They are excellent and quiet fans. They now carry them at Newegg too.

all those fans have 3 pin connections. i am looking for the 4 pin (or whatever it's called) that connects to the power supply wires that hard drives and stuff connect to.

I have only ever used generic fans (they aren't that loud, compared to the rest of my system). They have always came with 3 pin to 4 pin connector.

ok, how bout my second question:

2. I've had great success with the Vantec Aeroflow in several [AMD] builds and see no reason to try a different fan, unless of course someone can recommend one that is much better...(also, if going with an Intel build, would a Vantec Aeroflow work well or is there something better?)

The Zalman ZM-F1 and the Vantec Stealth come with a 3 pin to to 4 pin adapter. I've gotten Panaflo L1A's with 3 pin, 4 pin and untailed...depends where you buy them from.

If you're happy with the Vantec Aeroflow, go ahead and stick with it. I understand they run pretty quiet, but aren't too good for a overclocked system. For an Intel CPU I'd use the retail HSF, but I guess the Aerocool would work okay too.

For a heatsink? This is for an Intel system, right? I'd go with the stock Intel heatsink and fan if running the system at stock speeds...even for mild overclocking. But for heavy overclocking, I'd look to see what Thermalright has.

No, I've decided to go with this AMD chip and possibly do some overclocking

I'd still go with the stock heatsink for a non-overclocked system and something from Thermalright for a overclocked system.

for quiet and overclocking i'd also consider the Zalman 7000 AlCu, however IMO the best would be thermalright XP-120- make sure it fits first though.

also, note the panaflos at newegg are MIAs (medium), not the quieter LIAs (low). vantec stealths are definately not as quiet as LIAs.

also make sure u get a motherboard which supports Cool'n'Quiet, as it will turn down the fans when not needed at full power. the a64 HSF isn't too bad, but if you are going to be spending the sort of money to get a 3500+, then you probably wont mind spending a little more to get a better option.

if money isn't too tight then consider watercooling.

What do you mean "make sure it fits"? How do I do that? Isn't the XP-120 for intel systems? Cause i'm going with that AMD processor i mentioned above

Question

Ok, i'm looking at the thermalright xp-120 and i have a couple of questions:

1. in past builds, i've always used a heatsink/fan combo for the cpu (for example the Vantec Aeroflow). looking at the thermalright xp-120, i'm confused: is there a fan on it? do i need one?

2. does this fit a socket 754 amd 64 3000?

thanks.

theres not usually a fan provided with it, it does fit socket 754, and yes you would need a fan.. i'd recommend the Acoustifan or a Nexus 120mm fan. if u want it to be as quiet as possible get a (zalaman) fan controller also.
the thing u have to make sure of is that it will fit on the motherboard which you chose, as it is so big.. thermalright's website has a compatibility list IIRC.
