hard drive brand question
i am thinking about getting a Seagate or Maxtor which one should i go with

Are you buying a SATA or ATA drive? All Seagates have a 5 year warranty now. Their SATA drives are very quiet and perform well.

Both good drives. I like Western Digital as well. I have used Seagate SATA drives in the last two computers I built. Honestly right now I think most of the name brand drives are all good. The days of steering clear of whatever brand seem to be over at least for the time being.

Seagate ATA drives have a 5 year warranty also. WD ATA have 1 year warranty. Maxtor, I don't remember the length of their warranty.

Out of the two, go with Maxtor. Very good performers, very reliable. You can't really go wrong with a Maxtor.

WD and Maxtor are 1 or 3 year warranty, depending on model. Seagate is 5 years across the board.

Personally I have had far to many WD's die on me and stay waay away from them. I use Maxtor drives never had one die on me yet but a close friend of mine got 2 dead drives from them in a row they had her new ones in under a week that have been working fine ever since.
Seagate people also say many good things I have yet to try their drives the one thing that bothers me about them is that they fail to post the internal cache of their drives on their website, this makes me feel like they have a sense of their target market being to ignorent to know better, however another friend just had a Sata Seagate drive that was in a raid 0 array for 13months die on him and he just got a response back today 4 days after he e-mailed them saying to call this representative so they could give him a RMA number manually since his drive was technically 1month out of warranty but they would replace his drive however he must test the new one immediately since the catch is that they can only give him a 30day warranty on his new replacement drive. Seems pretty fair to me and makes me think they wont be difficult to deal with in actually holding up their end of the bargain on their warranty. |

My personal experience on the matter of drives... I will never trust Western Digital. They really have a good, streamlined RMA process though. Seagate had a bad run back a few years ago. I've RMA'd several Maxtor drives too. If the Maxtors had 5 year warranties, that's all I'd buy. All I will buy now is Seagate.
I used to use IBM drives exclusively for my personal builds, until their reliability went south. Maxtor was always my second choice then, followed by Fujitsu. Keep in mind, the above is personal opinion. |

1=Seagate
2=Maxtor 3=Samsung . . . 10=WD Had bad experience with WD, seagates are very quiet |
