Question about Intel P4/AMD Athlon 64 Processors
Since the Socket A processors for AMD (Athlon, Athlon Thunderbird, and Athlon XP) lasted for a little over 3 years, will the Socket 939 and new Intel designs do so as well?
On the price drop of the 22nd, I plan on buying a well performing CPU but not going too much on the high end in cost. However, in the future, I wouldn't mind being able to put a better performing CPU in there as well. Naturally, I also want Dual-Channeled RAM (which is why I am leaning towards buying an Intel CPU after the price drop). Does anyone have a good hindsight of how long the Socket 939 and how long Intel plans on using there new designs? If anyone could also name the new Intel socket or pin design or w/e I would appreciate it. |

The newest P4 socket is the 775, although its not tremmendously common just yet.
I don't think anyone including Intel or AMD have any long term vision about the life expectancy of the current sockets. If they do they don't make them public and there's a pretty good chance it would be wrong anyway. |
