Floppy drive problems...

trying to get a floppy in my new build and figured id save a few bucks by using an old one...but it doesnt seem to be working...on the old drives, the pin 3 (i believe) is removed, and on the cable that came with my mobo it is slot 5 that doesnt have space for the pin...do i need to get a newer floppy?

Are you refering to the power supply line to the floppy? It should only be a three pin line..

If the pin configurations are different to the point where the cable doesn't fit anymore... just spend the five bucks on a new one.

I've seen this before, a floppy with different missing pin. I think it was on a TX-97N super socket 7 Asus board which was built into a very small case. In any case, there are floppy cables out there with no filled-in holes, use them and it will work. (I have a collection of about 40 pc's ranging from Pentium 1 to early Pentium 3 that I picked up at an auction for almost free, so it took me only half an hour to find such a cable

If you can't find such a cable, get another floppy as nlawalker suggested. Or get a USB one for a few bucks more and you can leave it out of the system and only connect it when necessary

actually i think the middle connector on the IDE doesnt have any filled in- ill try it when i get a chance...just waiting till i figure out how to do a few other things i need to do inside the case.

regarding your collection of about 40 pcs...im getting there too lol...got about 13 so far but its not quite 40. ill check for the floppy connector in each, if not ill try using the middle connector on the IDE that i have that doesnt seem to have any pins blocked off. thanks for the help.

ehh i just realized that my floppy cable only has two connectors, one for mobo one for floppy...it had one that had no slots filled and one with the pin 5 filled. since the mobo had no pin 5, i tried using the end without pin 5 and attaching the other to my floppy which didnt have pin 3...no luck...if i buy a new floppy will it have a pin 3 and not a 5? thanks

Order a new floppy drive and use the new cable that came with the motherboard. Sounds like your old floppy drive is proprietary.

Note that a floppy cable is not an IDE cable - it's a floppy cable. 34 pins, twisted end toward drive.

yeah sorry i knew there was a difference but just referred to it as that since it looks the smae with the grey ribbon cable n all...thanks im gunna try to pick up a new one tommorow or order one.

Actually ive just been looking at floppies on newegg...and it looks like the same problem still exists, the pin 3 is removed (2nd pin from the left on the bottom row)...i dont know why this is though seems weird that they would make my floppy cable like that if it wont work with most floppies.
