Question A General HP HDD Question

A friend has a 2 year old HP pc that may need a HDD replacement.
The question is, will the restore disks load onto a fresh drive or is there a hidden partition on the HP drive that would require the purchase be made from HP?

You'll need to look at the drive and or owners manual.
What operating system does it have now?
What's the model number?

Hi Ezy,
Thats why I said general question. I don't have all the info.
Best Buy told her that the HDD needs to be replaced ($300.00 80gig) and that she had a virus, ($88.00 to tell her that). She called me to see if I could help. I'll get more info later tonight and post it.
Thanks for the reply.

I've only heard of Compaq machines with that problem. And since the machine was build before the merger, you could probably stick in any HDD.

Friend of mine bought an HP machine last year and I've worked on his plus a couple of others. They all have a restore partition on the hdd but don't come with restore disks anymore. The owner's manual suggest (highly recommends) using the CD-RW or DVD-RW on the unit to make your own restore disks. Takes one DVD or 8 CD's. If she didn't make any restore disks, you may have a problem.
