So I was looking at burners today at newegg and saw they were down to as low as 52 USD.

I was just looking at different speed 8x,12x,16x and caches 2mb and 8mb. I mainly looked at NEC and Lite On but also checked out the Plextors, these were 8mb caches.

I was just curious which would be the best for the money. Does media even come as high as 16x yet?

Also some come out and say Dual Layer. So most cannot burn dual layer? and does dual layer require special media?

Hi,

the best right now would be the dual layer burners. Yep, dual layer recording is fairly new, therefore the majority of them can't. Dual layer burners are for example, LiteOn SOHW 832S, NEC2510A, LG GSA4120B, Philips DVDRW885K, Pioneer A08.

There are no 16x media so far, so the highest speed for DVD+R is still 8x, but the 16x media is being manufactured and should appear soon.
On the other hand, dual layer media, is available. . but it's expensive. . well, it's new anyway.

Also, only DVD+R comes also as dual layer. . known as DVD+R DL.

Will dual layer be able to put 4.7+4.7gigs on one DVD?

Also I am looking at these two lite on drives, How is lite on doing with there DVD burners? Both are basically the same price. The difference is on is 8x and DL and the other is 12x. Also would I notice a cache difference of 2mb vs 8mb?

I'd buy the DL burner. I doubt you will notice a difference with the cache as the drives all have buffer underrun protection anyway. DL blanks are frightfully expensive now, but you will be ready for the future. The Lite-On 832S is my choice.

No. A dual layer DVD holds 7.95 GB (not exactly doubling the capacity of single layer (4.37 GB), but close to it).

Thanks GLC and RJ.

I wanted to back up My Band of Brothers DVD, I have let some friends watch them and some look bad.

Could I fit two band of brothers DVDs on one burned DL DVD? Since you can fit a DL Movie DVD on one burned SL DVD, is that right?

What does everyone think of http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...152-031&depa=0 This NEC drive. Does this have all the features of the others? Like buffer underrun protection GLC mentioned.

How are NEC drives? Any good?

There are no DVD+RW DL discs, only DVD+R DL. But your burner isn't capable anyway, the NEC 2510A is NEC's first DL drive.
The newest Nero 6 should burn DVD+R DL, but from what I've read it doesn't burn it correct, there are still bugs to be ironed out.

NEC drives are very good. .. that's a very good price for the new NEC drive .. I didn't even know it was already out.
That drive burns to 16x DVD+R (they're not out yet, but will appear soon), and 4x DVD+R DL (they should appear at the beginning of 2005, you'll then be able to burn a DVD+R DL in about 30 minutes).

And buffer underrun protection has been around for years as standard, there are no drives without it.

Ah, sorry, I overlooked the term DL in your "4x DL DVD burner". Thought it was a 4x burner and they are not capable of burning DL. But next time please tell the model number. . like "I have a NEC 3500". .it avoids misunderstandings.

So, in that case you can burn a DVD+R DL. But as I said, DVD+R DL is the only dual layer media available. There is no dual layer rewritable.
Also I don't know if Roxio EMC 7 is capable of burning DVD+R DL without any glitches.
Since I don't have a DL burner yet I can't tell you which programs burn a DVD+R DL successfully. From what I've read in another forum Sonic RecordNow 7.2 can burn a DVD+R DL successfully, but since DL burning is not yet widely used I can't tell you about other programs.

A pack of DVD+R or a pack of DVD+R DL ? I guess DVD+R DL as you wanted to know if you can burn to a dual layered blank .. well, they're pretty new, and therefore pretty expensive. . around $15. But I heard that the price has dropped to $10 .. at least with a certain brand (which I don't remember right now).
I don't think DVD+R DL is available as a pack already, only single pieces because of their price.

Verbatim is the only brand of DL media I've seen so far.

Deadman, your burner will burn those RW's you have, no need to return them. Most new burners will burn both plus and minus R's and RW's - the only thing a dual layer burner adds is the capability to burn +R DL.

The reason to buy a DL burner now is not to burn DL, the media is just too expensive. The reason is to be ABLE to when the media is affordable, which it WILL be soon.
