If you have SP1 you should be able to use any size HDD, even that new 400 GB monster.

think it is the password sticker has 2004 on it

i thought it was the motherboard that makes the decision on the barrier

what about the 137 meg barrier?

That's why you need SP1.

The motherboard restricts the bus speed of the disk, not it's size

i checked the win xp and it is service pack 1 but in the past it has been the bios that has limited the size of the drive, how do i tell what maximum size drive the motherboard will take as i havent got a motherboard manual

You don't have to check it. Your mainboard is new enough to be able to take any hard drive size. As long as you use an SATA or ATA133 connector, it will work for all current hard disks. Also, you can use Everest to get the name of your mb.

It's not *guaranteed* that it will break 137 gigs, that's why we need to know the motherboard model.

That board is new enough I'm 99% sure it will go over 137 gigs no problem.

You can download bios updates, drivers, and manuals here.
