printer out of paper error

I recently bought a iogear usb print server to connect my compaq a3000 printer directly to my network(2 pc's and a laptop). When i print a test page, the print job is sent to the print que with the status as "printing" but the nothings printings. After about a minute i get the "printer out of paper error" message. Now when i unhook the printer cable from the print server and connect directly to my pc the printer works with no problem. I followed the setup manual instructions and didn't notice any hardware or configuration problems. any possible reasoning why i'm getting this error message? any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Just a thought, my print server is setup through a TCP/IP port and needs a port open in my firewall to work.

Well, since you are actually able to print, are you sure the printer can grab the paper okay? I've seen where after a few prints it can't grab the paper right and you have to make sure it is shoved in all the way.

Plotter/ Out of Paper

I am having the same problem. I have an Iogear Print server and it's connected to an HP 500 (plotter). It has plenty of paper, but all to often it tells me I'm out ofo paper. I cancel that print and the next few print fine before it tells me I'mout ofo paper again...Did you ever figure yours out?

All of you are having bidirectional communication issues.

Parallel printers should have a IEEE1284-certified bidirectional cable that's not defective, and if it's connected directly to the PC, the parallel port needs to be set to at least bidirectional in the bios - with ECP preferred.

All print servers used with modern printers need to be capable of bidirectional communications.
