New PC, tough choice while looking ahead
I have a tough choice to make and I was wondering what the community thought. I priced up 2 PCs looking for best possible expansion in terms of speed in about a year or so.
=============================================================== System #1: MB: Abit AA8-DuraMAX Intel 925x P4 800FSB LGA775 $157.49 CPU: P4 530 Prescott 3.0GHz, 800MHz FSB, Socket 775, 1MB Cache $185.00 RAM: Corsair VS1GBKIT533D2 1GB Kit DDR2-533 PC2-4200 Value Select $300.00 HD: WD Raptor WD360GD 36.7GB Serial ATA 10,000RPM w/8MB Buffer $111.00 Video Card: Abit RX600 Pro-PCIE Radeon X600 Pro PCI Express 256MB Video Card w/TV-Out & DVI $174.95 Case: Raidmax Storm 847 ATX847WUP Mid Tower w/420W $48.99 DVD/CD-RW: Liteon SOHW-832S 8X Double Layer DVD Dual Rewriter $85.99 DVD/CD-ROM: Liteon LTD-166S / XJHD166S / LTD-167S 16X IDE DVD $31.99 Total: $1,095.41 This system has the new P4 socket, DDR2, and PCIe technologies. I could upgrade the CPU when the faster FSB comes out and buy more mature DDR2 when it becomes available. =============================================================== System #2: MB: MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum nForce3 Ultra Athlon 64(FX) Skt939 DDR ATX $139.99 CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3500+ Processor Socket 939 $390.00 RAM: Corsair VS1GBKIT400 1GB Kit DDR400 PC3200 CAS2.5 Value Select $155.00 HD: WD Raptor WD360GD 36.7GB Serial ATA 10,000RPM w/8MB Buffer $111.00 Video Card: XFX PVT40KND GeForce 6800 AGP 8X 128MB DDR Video Card w/TV-Out & Dual DVI $272.00 Case: Raidmax Storm 847 ATX847WUP Mid Tower w/420W $48.99 DVD/CD-RW: Liteon SOHW-832S 8X Double Layer DVD Dual Rewriter $85.99 DVD/CD-ROM: Liteon LTD-166S / XJHD166S / LTD-167S 16X IDE DVD $31.99 Total: $1,234.96 This system has the new AMD64 socket that AMD will hopefully stick with for a while. It also has a 64-Bit CPU, which will be nice if I don’t plan on buying a new PC for a while after this one. There are however 2 concerns of mine. The most prominent one is that no AMD64 mobos support DDR2 (If they are coming out soon, the choice is easy and I’ll just hold off until then. Anyone know?). A much distant second is that no AMD64 mobos have the PCIe slots, which Intel is pushing hardcore. ========================================================== So let’s hear what you have to say. Thanks Steegs |

IMHO its better to stick with Intel's socket 478 interface MOBO and CPUs right now. PCIE cards are really expensive and AGP still remains as technology that can be further expanded. If i were you, i'd look into a 3.2E prescott with the P4P800 MoBo from ASUS and get a better video card. a Radeon9800Pro or if you're willing to spend a little more a Geforce6800 plain.
Edit-i wouldnt get DDR2 ram because right now, it ends up not having a faster speed then the DDR1 and costs significantly more. If you want to upgrade a couple of years from now, you're probably still going to have to get a MoBo with a better chipset by then. Editied Edit-would be wise to get a better PSU cuz i don't think Raidmax makes quality PSUs get an Enlight or Thermaltake 420 instead.

I'd agree with Yuanji that it would be better to go with intel's last generation instead of the new LGA 775 socket as of now. The problem is that DDR2 is way too expensive right now, and there aren't many decent PCI-E video cards out yet to make it worth making the switch. If you're into gaming, you would be much happier with a 6800 than an X600. I've always been partial to intel, so I'd recommend going with a 2.8, 3.0 or 3.2 northwood or prescott depending on price and if you plan on overclocking, but AMD could do just as well for you I suppose. Then again, probably the best situation for you would be to wait a few months for manufacturers to improve on PCI-E and DDR2. If you're willing to go with less extreme graphics, you could just get teh PCI-E X600 and see if you mobo supports normal DDR so you don't have to buy the expensive stuff yet. I think that intel's new chipset is definately a better choice for the future, but it's so limited right now that components are either too expensive or not available yet.
