i have an abit k7 board amd 1gig processor that is only 3 months old and about a week ago, my printer just stopped working. I tried all the troubleshooting stuff and the printer itself is fine, it works with my other computer, I switched cables to the printer, i uninstalled and reinstalled the software and all to no avail. I am using Windows ME, but my other computer is also ME, but it's a abits k7RAID board. Anyone got any ideas? Thanks

Looks like you have covered most of your bases, do have another printer to try? Perhaps you have a bad port on your board or maybe have changed a CMOS setting.

I have another printer, i have to get ink for it tomorrow and I'll try it and see what happens. If I have a bad printer port, what can I do? I've never dealt with this before. Would it just "burn out" like that? It's weird, it was working fine, then it was just gone. Is this "typical" or "normal"? to have a port go bad, I mean?
thanks, David |

Well, I can't imagine that it's really the port itself is damaged. I've never seen a port damage so far. Well, nevertheless it can happen.
So first of all try that other printer. If it still doesn't work, check the BIOS settings for it. How old is that printer ? If it's not that old, there's the possibility that it has USB. In this case hook the printer to the USB and forget the LPT. RJ

It can happen and I have seen it although it doesn't occur often. When troubleshooting try the easiest and the obvious first. As RJ suggests if the other printer doesn't work try resetting the port settings for the printer then the BIOS settings for the port. If it is actually the port that has gone bad it may be a warranty issue with your board or for a realitively small $ amount you can purchase another LPT port - LAVA is one brand name I can think of.
