Power Unit

My monitor keeps shutting itself off within 3 seconds of being turned on. I was told it may be the power unit. I tried the monitor on this system and it works. I tried a used on on the other system and it comes up "Signal not found". I tried a new video card and it worked for a week and then the problem came back.Obviously the problem is not in the monitor nor the video card, i assume. The original video card was a VC-RIVATNT-16M6MB RIVA TNT AGP. The new one was a RADEON 7000. The system is a Pentium 3, 128 PC100 DIMM. It had Windows 98 SE and i installed Windows XP on it. The system i am onnow is a Dell and took this monitor and hooked it up to the other one and all i got was a black screen and the monitor light kept flashing. The info at the bottom of the power unit says..... Model NO:FSP300-60ATV
Input: 115/230V-10/5A, 60/50Hz
Output: 300W

I have no idea what the numbers mean but any info you can give me would be appreciated. Also, i was given a Compaq Tower and tried it with the monitor and it works. The Compaq only has 6 MB of RAM though, and has pentium 2.. I guess enough for my sons to play their games. i was just wondering If Compaq is a good system. It was never connected to the internet and therefore has no modem. Thank you.

power unit

also, i was wondering if the motherboard, etc can have a virus or would it just be in the harddrive? And can i use the power supply unit in the Compaq (it says 200W) in the other unit(which says 300 W)?

I think the problem with the first computer is the motherboard itself might be dying.

A virus would be found on the hard drive, not the motherboard.

Compaq computers are "okay" for general use, but you'd never see a computer enthusiast with one (unless he was just fixing it...he'd never own one).

No, you cannot use a power supply from a Compaq in any other computer. The wiring for the motherboard connector is proprietary.

Thank you Cricket. I appreciate your reply. I will just leave the Compaq as is for the boys to play games when they come over.
