Upgrading Hard Drive...Just A Black Screen

I just installed a new hard drive, and I just get a black screen. I took out my C drive, but I also have a D hard drive. I thought there were driver conflicts the first time I got the black screen with blinking white cursor, so I unplugged the second hard drive, the D drive. It said it found the new drive, but it still stopped at the black screen. An operatoring system was installed when the drive was in another computer. Would I have to format and reinstall to get it to work with the computer?

Need more information....

Operating System.... XP? ME? 98?

Also be sure to configure your JUMPERS on the back of the HD's. Make sure that only 1 is set to master and 1 to slave, or you could put them both on cable select and the computer will assign the drives according to their position on the IDE cable.

98SE was on the old hard drive, Xp is on the new.

I set the jumpers right, that's not the problem.

Well, not sure what to tell ya. XP should migrate just fine from one computer to the next. Although I suppose you could try a reformat, if you do please let me know how it goes as there have been several discussions about moving HD's with XP from one computer to another the past few days.

I could not successfully move the hard drive. I had to format and reinstall XP and everything worked fine.

If the OS was installed on another computer and you're trying to move it to a new one, you're probably going to have to reformat. XP doesn't like being moved to a new home without a proper welcome.

Edit: Just realized you got it fixed.

I've successfully migrated HD's with XP to another computer with no problems. I've also had others give me trouble. Someone in another thread suggested that if there are more then "X" amount of hardware changes then the migration will fail.
