rate: PII 300 vs PII 633 celeron

know if there is much performance increase between the 2 cpus? If so, what would that be?

thks

Depends if everything else is equal and on what you're doing with the computers.

The PII 300MHz would have more cache (512k), but the cache would run half the processor speed...150MHz instead of 300MHz.

The Celeron 633MHz would only 128k cache, but the cache would run at full processor speed...633MHz.

Side by side, I think the Celeron might have a slight edge because of the processor speed...unless the application being used takes advantage of the bigger of L2 cache of the PII 300MHz.

I had a PII 300MHz and I'm running a PIII 600MHz right now...the PIII 600MHz is a lot faster than the PII 300MHz...but the two computers were totally different animals, so it's not a fair comparison.

thks for the reply. I thought this PC, was a PIII 633. But after running AIDA32, this is what it gave me:
Computer
Operating System Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
OS Service Pack Service Pack 4
Internet Explorer 6.0.2800.1106 (IE 6.0 SP1)
Computer Name HOMEPLACE1
User Name Administrator
Logon Domain HOMEPLACE1

Motherboard
CPU Type Intel Celeron II, 633 MHz (9.5 x 67)Motherboard Name PCPartner AP133AS1/AP133AS3/AP133BS1/AP133BS3/AP133MS1/AP133MS3/APPAS1/APPAS3/APPBS1/APPBS3/APPMS1/APPMS3/VIA955D/VIB887D / A-Trend ATA-V930-SX0 / Octek Rhino i845GL-M4E
Motherboard Chipset VIA VT82C693A Apollo Pro133
System Memory 512 MB (SDRAM)
BIOS Type Award Modular (07/03/00)

So.. is the comparison u give between the PII 633 Celeron? U make mention of a PIII 600?

thks again

I've never owned or worked on a Celeron faster than 300MHz so I really don't know how a 633MHz Celeron II performs compared to a Pentium II 300MHz.

I do own a Pentium III 600MHz and know how that compares to a Pentium II 300MHz in terms of performance...it's a lot faster. That's the only comparison I can give you.

I do know that Celerons generally don't perform as well as a Pentium at the same processor speed because of the different amounts of cache used in both.

That Celly will outperform the Pentium II.

The PII 300 has an FSB of 66 MHz and 512 KB of L2 Cache. The L2 Cache only operates at half speed.

The Celeron 633 also has an FSB of 66 MHz. It's got only 128 KB of L2 Cache, but on chip, means full speed. And that Celly is based on the PIII rather than the PII, so it's also got the ISSE instructions.
