Power Management Question
Is it harmful to leave a laptop idle for an hour or two while on screensaver?

Should be no problem if not running on batteries. Check your display properties for a "shut down monitor" option to save some life of the screen.

Screensavers do use CPU cycles, which generate heat. I'd turn the screensaver completely off and just set the power management to turn off the monitor after something like 15 minutes. There is no reason to use a screensaver these days on any modern computer other than for entertainment - screen burnin is a thing of the past.

glc: Which do you recommend? Turn the monitor off? Or go on "standby"?

Just set it so the monitor turns off. Standby mode uses more power trying to start up the computer again than it saves over span of a few hours.

I just set my monitor to turn off instead of using a screensaver. I do it because I want to extend the life of my screen as long as possible. How much does it help? I don't know, but it doesn't hurt either....

If we turn the monitor off.....whats the rest of the computer doing? Is there a need for the fan to work?
