Some drives have problems with some disks, specially if they are multissesion. How old is your cd drive? Try to read it on a cd burner.

You might start off by unplugging the cables and restarting the computer. Then power down and plug in again and see if it finds a new device on the reboot.

Has it ever worked?

go to "Control Panel" double click "System" in the new window click on "Hardware" then click on "Device Manager".
In Device manager look for DVD/CD ROM and look to see if your CD is there, if it is right click the mouse pointer over your CD and then click "properties" in the drop down list, in the properties window click "Remove".
Now close all of the windows and restart your computer, windows will detect a new piece of hardware tell you what it is and automatically install the "ATAPI" drivers for your CD. If this does not happen either your CD is faulty or the IDE cable to the back of the CD is faulty, it is also possible that your power supply is faulty and not suppling power to the CD, this is very unlikely as other hardware (ie the hard drive) that uses the same power supply circuit is working.
If this method fails then it is possible that you dont have the correct driver for windows XP.
Do you know the make and model of your CD? if you do it is possible to get drivers from the driverguide.

Are you saying that the CD drive is not appearing at all in My Computer? Open Device Manager as already suggested, is the drive listed in there, and if so, does it have a yellow ! by it? Do you have a CD burner and have you recently installed or uninstalled any CD burning software?

Danny.
How many CD or DVD drives have you got in your machine and do you feel confident enough to remove the side cover?

Hey Danny.
I am going to make a couple of assumptions here, you say you are possibly not confident enough to take the side off your machine, so I am assuming that either the drives came with your machine or somebody fitted them for you a while ago.
Can you give me a little more info about your machine, do you have antivirus and is it upto date and when was the last time you did a full scan of your machine for viruses? do you know about adaware? this is a small program that scans your computer for leeching programs that come down from the internet and spy on your internet habits?
