Alright, My comp as of yet!
Ok, I have been puting this together from newegg.com, and these are the parts I have come up with, remember, please comment on these parts, and feel free to tell me about other parts I have not listed here, that will be compatable with what I want. I have about 1-4 different selections under each part, that I am deciding on.

The case is really your choice. So whichever you like best, get.
Go with the Asus board. They are one of the highest quality MBs you can get, while Gigabyte is not known for making top of the line MBs. If you can afford the 6800GT, by all means do get it. It will do just about anything you could want graphics wise. You don't want ECC memory. Go with non-ECC, unbuffered, PC3200 from Crucial, Corsiar, Kingston, Geil, or Mushkin. I'm not sure on either of those CDRWs. You may consider Plextor, Sony, LG, or LiteOn. I wouldn't get that PSU. Aspire PSUs are bottom of the barrel. I'd go with the Enlight 420W. |

I kinda want a 500w power supply though.....but I guess I could settle for a 420w right? And why not ECC memory, and why unbuffered?

The case is purely your choice. Get what you like. Personally I like the CoolerMaster Pretorian silver best out of those.
Instead of getting that expensive and uneeded ECC registered RAM go with THIS Corsair RAM. It is cheaper and has better timings than either of the ones you have listed. For the optical drive look at Plextor, LG, Lite-On, NEC, or Asus. HERE is a good, quiet CD-RW drive. If you want you could get a DVD burner which will burn both CD's and DVD's. THIS is a good one. Also as mentioned before get the Asus motherboard. Not only is Asus better quality, but the Gigabyte you listed is a socket 754 while the CPU you have listed is socket 939. The Asus board is socket 939 and has just about the best chipset available for the Athlon 64. About the power supply, Aspires are notoriously bad. Stay away from them. Refer to the Power Supply Reference Guide to see the good and bad brands. You do not really need 500 watts. A good 400 watt would be more than adequate. Again, as I have linked to before, the Enlight 420w would be a perfect match for that system and it is not expensive. You need a good quality power supply if you want a stable, long lasting system. A poor quality 500 watt power supply will only cause problems and possibly quite a bit of money lost in replacing parts that it fries.

So...what your saying, is that there is no REALL difference between the two, except the retail box...and do I really need that?
Oh yeah, and BTW I noticed the 10,000 RPM had less GB on it...and the 72,000 RAM had ALOT more...so wich one should I go with? |

There is no difference at all between the retail and OEM drives. Only the box they come in. I would certainly go with the OEM SATA version. The 10,000 RPM Raptor only has 74 GB but is very fast. The Seagate has a lot more space but isn't quite as fast running at 7,200 RPM (not 72,000
). 7200 RPM drives are plenty fast though and the 200 GB Seagate would be a better value.

Why did you start another thread? You've already got a bunch going.
Next time when you list the parts, just list the name and model of the part...we don't need to see all the specifics, that just wastes forum space. Okay... Can't help you with the case choice...you have to decide that yourself. Hard drive...either brand is fine...I'd go with the Seagate because of the longer warranty. I'd go with the ASUS motherboard over the Gigabyte. Video card...can't help you there since I'm not a gamer. RAM...Kingston over the Transcend. Floppy...yeah, okay...Sony is fine...a floppy drive is a floppy drive. CD-RW...neither. I'd go with Lite-On there. Power Supply...don't get the Aspire. There are much better brands available. Sorry for the Off-Topic
![]() Hi Ho, just a quick question: I've been trying to find a comparison in performance between the ASUS K8V and the K8N-E Deluxe. I've had an Athlon XP build which used the nForce2 chipset, and I was very happy about it. Now I'm planning to build an Athlon64, and since I've had such good experiences with the nForce chipset, I was thinking about using the successor of the nForce2, ie nForce 3 250 GB (which the Asus K8N-E Deluxe has). Mainly : VIA had problems with the Athlons XP, so I have never used them. You said the K8V would be the best bet for an AMD64 build, while I always thought it would be the K8N-E deluxe I've been looking for articles that compare the chipsets, but I can't really find one with the K8N-E Deluxe (it's still kind of new and all), but in general performance seems to be very dependant of the manufacturer. Since you said the K8V would be the best bet, I was thinking maybe you know of a nice place where they compare these motherboards? Cheers, Moose. |

I'll second the RAM choice. KLingston/corsair value RAm should be plenty. As for the video card, I'd go for a NVidia 6800 for that price
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...130-202&depa=1 or for intensive gaming, the 6800GT: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...130-203&depa=1 or, if you aren't going to do any intensive gaming, the 9800 pro 128mb http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...102-268&depa=1 The WD raptor is a very, very fast drive. You probably won't use up those 74GB for some time yet. I'd stick with that if you can afford it. The via chipset for '64's is very good, in fact, the best there is. Stick with the Asus mobo fedz

Just a note I'd like to make... The ASUS A8V Deluxe is a fantastic board, and the VIA K8T800 Pro is a fantastic chipset, performing slightly better than all its rivals, except for the SiS chipset (it's not widely available or supported yet though, and thus not recommended). Despite its great performance though If you're interested in overclocking you'd be much happier with the Nforce 3 250 chipset. This is for a couple reasons:
1. Unlike the VIA chipset, the NForce has the option of locking the AGP and PCI buses to improve stability on overclocked systems. 2. As part of the chipset name "250" refers to it allowing the CPU to run a 250 MHz HyperTransport while keeping the same multiplier of 4. This potenitally means 1000 MHz HTT bandwith, versus the 800 MHz bandwith on the K8T800 Pro. If you're more inclined to stay with the K8T800 Pro, get the ASUS. However if you'd like to be able to overclock go with the MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum found here |

HERE is an article comparing the VIA, SIS, and Nvidia chipsets. I read about it in CPU Magazine and haven't read this article yet but there it is.

Looks good to me bthizle1. Remember to get an OS. You can get XP OEM from newegg for about $90.
Overclocking is intentionally running the CPU at a higher clock speed than it was rated at. Check the sticky threads in the CPU, MB, RAM and OC'ing forum. |

That looks very nice. There isn't anything I would change. About the modem, if you are on dial up and need a modem then you should get one. I don't know which one would be best though because I don't know anything about them. I haven't had a modem in either of my PC's for over two years.

Hm HiHo you seem to be right. I must have been thinking of the non-pro version of the K8T800 because they're not locked on that one. But the bandwith and performance issue still stands as the NForce being the best, though it is the most expensive.

Just a thought. If you can afford it then you might want to get the Seagate 73GB 15,000RPM SCSI for $505. its 5,000 rpm faster than the other one you mentioned and its only one gig less. Mad expensive though.

You have everything there except a monitor and an OS. I'm assuming you already have a monitor but if you need Windows XP you should buy it with everything else.

About the 74 GB:
80 GB Hard disks only have 74.4 GB usable space don't they ? So 74 GB Raptors have even less usable HDD? |
