Angry Copying files results in 30 LOST gigs of data?!

I searched on google and this site came up I hope you can help me! I have 2 computers on a network. I was trying to copy files (mp3's mostly) from my D: Drive on computer 1 to my D: drive on comp2. When copying these files I got the error message "(this file)s path is too deep". Frustrated I shut down both computers and slept on it. This morning I figured out what that easy message meant, that these files were saved in too many folders, so I booted both computers up to try again.

Much to my dismay, when I opened my D: drive on comp1 no files or folders show up in the window. On the bottom left of the window it says 0 objects, however on the pie graph on the left side still shows 29.2GBs used space.
I have a fear that I may have accidentally chose to cut instead of copy, and upon shutting the computer down lost my data, but if that were the case, then wouldn't it show 0 GB space being used?
I'm running windows 2000 on both computers, with comp1 in FAT32 and comp2 in NTFS (this should create no problem to my knowlegde, as I have transfered said files before)

I do have "Show hidden files and folders" checked in folder options, I also performed a search for files and nothing came up. I tried opening winamp and playing my playlists (the playlists are saved on the harddrive that I can't find the data on) and the playlists were still showing up, however when I try to play them, winamp just keeps switching to the next song because it can't find the files I assume.

Please help me I hope I haven't lost almost 30 gigs of mp3s and video files. If there is no solution w/o the use of some sort of data recovery software, please give me your recommendations for which software to use.

Thanks!
