CD-Burning stops at 5%...

This is a new problem (to me): Whenever I try to burn a cd the process stops at 5%. I can hear the cd spinning, stopping, spinning, etc. inside my burner, but nothing happens and I have to abort the process.
At first I thought maybe the laser was broken or something, but now I've gone and rent an external cd-writer (connected through firewire), and it has the same problem (only it stops at 6% instead of 5, and nero gives a message saying the process failed).

I tried about 4 or 5 different cd's, but they were all from the same box. Could it be that the whole box of cd's is corrupt? I've used this brand of cd's before (Nashua) so that would be very strange..

I also tried re-installing Nero, so I don't think that's the problem. Can anyone help me out with this?

Thanks in advance,

David

ps: I have a Pioneer DVD-RW (an expensive one) and the external cd-writer I got from school is a Sony.

i would try a different brand of cd's. its not one i have heard of before, and if you could borrow another one from a friend or something, its a free test to just eliminate the media being the problem
