I have just bought a 200GB WD SATA hd. My PSU has SATA power socket. Why does the HD come with two power sockets? One the molex, the other the sata?
Is this some kind of intermediate for those without PSU that has SATA out? What happens if I connect both power supplies? Thanks

If you connect both, you will probably damage the drive. Use one or the other. The SATA connector allows hotswapping.

An adapter only costs $2, so it's no big deal once the native SATA drives are out and you don't have a PSU with SATA power connection. Quote:

Thanks.
Now on to technical questions: I formatted the WD HD using xp>manage. Then, when its nearly finished, like 99%, or maybe 100%, says windows could not format drive. I tried to reformat, but it did not work. I tried to browse the drive at first it did not work also. Then I just used the scandisk, during startup, xp did the rest. After restart, I can browse the HD. There is this RECYCLER folder which I could not delete in the WD HD. Is there anything wrong with my HD? Currently I am running Norton Disk Doctor, just in case. I also have downloaded the Disk utility from WD to check the drive. Why is my format incomplete/could not be completed. Is this an error in the plate? Also, when it registers, it only says 185GB, not 200GB, is this normal? Thanks. Last edited by mystvearn; 09-30-2004 at 06:10 PM. |

185gb is normal for a 200gb advertised drive. Advertised 200gb is 200,000,000,000 bytes, but 1kb is really 1024b, etc. You cannot delete the recycler, that's a system folder. You can disable the recycle bin on that drive if you absolutely must get rid of it. Use the WD utility to test the drive to make sure it's healthy.

Thanks. And about the format error? It looks like nothing is wrong.
After finishing norton scan disk, the drive is fine. Now I am transfering 150gb into the HD. |
