drive not working

I just built a P4 3.0E system for someone, and the HD i bought for it is a seagate 80gb with 8mb cache. However it seems to be having problems. WHen i try to install the OS on it, it doesnt work, it wont start formatting.

i tried slaving it to an already up computer the the computer is saying the drive has failed and it is not initialized, etc.

any ideas whats up?

scanned it with seagate tools, this is what it gave me:

SeaTools Online Complete Surface Scan

Scanning drive: Primary IDE Channel : ST380013A

Errors were found during the scan.

SeaTools has stopped scanning drive ST380013A because at least 20 sectors on the drive are unreadable. As a precaution against data loss, it is strongly suggested that you back up any important data on the drive as soon as possible.

not much help, it basicallyu told me my drive has problems, are these fixable?

i ran the test that you download and boot to on a floppy, it found hundreds of errors before it reached 1 percent, i stopped the scan and told it to try to overwrite to the bad sectors it found and it failed on all o them.

also when booting the PC it says 'Primary Slave drive failed" (and that is the HD not working right)

That hard drive is defective. Contact the vendor you got if from for a RMA and return it.

ya man that HD is faulty for sure. i have the exact same drive, ST130038A, as my secondary drive in my machine that im on right now and it works excellent. So i would definitely return it cause i didnt have any problems like that. One thing to note just for the road, those 80 pin cables that come with the seagate drives are super cheap and rip off easy so try to be extra gentle while your hooking it up and taking it off. good luck on everything. peace
