splat First time building, dont know what to do, need any help!!!

Hello,

my son wants to build a computer, he has been looking at alien ware, and would like to build his own as good or better then them. we are useing alienware seeing as i belive they are the best gaming computers out there, or so ive heard, my son is 14 and is very smart with the computer, but he wants to be able to build his own, our budget is around 2,000 dollars. we know you need a mother board and such, but we are not sure what to get, and even how to do it!! we read the FAQ on how to build your own, but hopefully someone can help us here. we are looking for someone to help us out and tell us what we need, and how we can do it. we will be buying ALL our parts from this site, but we are unsure what to buy, .
this is going to be his computer only, and he wants it to be mainly for gaming, but very fast. if there is a direct phone number of someone off this site that would help us out, that would be awesome if you could email us if you dont want to give it out in public. aabattes4@aol.com. he knows he wants a cool looking case. he also said he would like for it to have LEDS in it, so it glows at night at such, but we have no idea where to start on that. so hopefully someone can help us out here. like i said i would buy all the parts off this site, i just need help building it, and what good is it if i do it the alienware way, where you click what you want, he wants to build it him self.
so if someone can tell us what we can get for around 2,000 or a little more, then please post, or email us. we will be checking multi times every day.

thank you so much,
phil ( dad )
Vinnie ( Son )

Welcome to PCMech!

I definitely vote for building your own PC. It's a good experience. You'll save some money, and gain 1st hand knowledge. Plus, you're almost guaranteed that you'll get a solid system that you want. None of the crappy parts, or specs that you really don't need.

My suggestion is to read around the forums. You'll find numerous threads posted by people who are in the same boat as you are in. By reading those posts, you'd learn what parts are needed, the specs, price range, the good brands, where to get them, etc.

When you get a general idea. Pick the parts that you're planning to buy and post them here, including the price. Then, PCMech veterans will comment on your parts list and will give you some pointers.

My advice is to pay close attention to the vid and sound card since this build will be a gaming system. The heart and soul of any gaming rig are in its video and sound cards.

Btw, PCMech doesn't sell any PC parts (as far as I know...been out a while ). However, they do sell a CD-Rom guide choke full of helpful pointers, good utility softwares, and what-nots.

Hello and welcome to PCmech! I hope you find the information provided by everyone here to be helpful.

Now, you say you want to buy all the parts from this website. The problem is that PCmech doesn't sell parts. Newegg.com is the most recommended site around here. They have the best customer service around along with low prices.

With $2000 you can build a very nice PC. It depends on what you need included. Do you need a monitor, keyboard/mouse, and speakers? Just the PC? Do you and an AMD or Intel system?

After we know those things we can help you select good quality parts that will fit your budget. A case, however, is not dependent on those other things. You can choose just about any case you want. They don't impact performance at all but there are different levels of quality. Look around HERE and find one you like. The higher quality brands include CoolerMaster, Antec, Thermaltake, Aspire, Silverstone, Kingwin, Lian-Li, and Enlight. Ignore the power supplies in all but Enlight, Aopen, and Thermaltake. Those are about the only three brands that come with a good quality power supply. I the case you like has a low quality power supply you can still get it but replace the power supply with a good one. We'll get to that later.

EDIT: It seems some things were said while I was typing. Here is a preliminary list of parts that would work well:

Hi Vinnie. welcome to pcmech, you will find plenty of help here especialy as you are looking at gaming because that is quite a popular topic here on the boards. Machines for gaming are obviously all about performance and speed.
We had a saying when I used to build race engines for cars and bikes "more power = more money" so bare that in mind when making your selections, the most important is a good power supply and a good video and sound card after that look at the heart of your machine to see what proccessor and mobo you are going to use to drive them.
Best of luck (luck is one thing you won't need here with these guys)

Richard.

Well with no need for speakers and a $2500 budget you could easily fit in a nice monitor. If you removed the speakers speakers and the monitor in the system I posted above to something like THIS it would bring the price to $2,113.88. That leaves plenty for a case and whatever else you might want. I really like the CoolerMaster WaveMaster Blue. BTW, it's best to use the edit button rather than post several times in a row.

It allows you to plug in a cable and watch tv programs from your PC

Any floppy can do. You can even use your old one. Some people don't even bother putting this thing on their system.

Quote:
hard drive : no idea, link me >_<
Choose from Maxtor, Seagate, and Western Digital only.

It doesn't matter for the average PC user. Choose Pro if you want advanced networking options. But, I say stick with home and save a few bucks.

Asus is the best brand in my opinion. I'm sure many around here agree. The A8V Deluxe that I linked to above is an excellent board.

Quote:
video card : Not sure, but i want one of the best, need help here!!
The one I linked to above is the best for the money. The 6800 Ultra is even better but it's $500+.

Quote:
tv tuner : what is this? lol
It lets you watch TV on your PC and also capture video from any analog source. It's not necessary and if you aren't going to do that then you don't need it.

Quote:
power supply : no idea, lol need help!
The Enlight 420w I linked to above is the best bang for the buck. It is a good quality power supply and will run just about any system without a problem. Quality comes before watts. Look at the Power Supply Reference Guide that James linked to as well as the Power Supply FAQ.

Quote:
Athlon 63 FX-53 i think i can afford it, is this the best?
That is about the best. If you can afford it. You won't be dissapointed.

Quote:
ram : Not sure, help me out buddys!! lol
The RAM I linked to above is the best deal around. 1 GB of PC3200 RAM with 2.5 CAS latency for $157. Unless you overclock, which I don't recommend with this system , you won't get any performance advantage with faster RAM.

Quote:
floppy : dunno, help me out, gimme links at new eggs guys for all the parts i dunno on!! :P
A floppy drive is a floppy drive. Not absolutly necassary but I'd add one just in case.

Quote:
hard drive : no idea, link me >_<
As mentioned by James Seagate, Western Digital, and Maxtor are the ones you should look at. The Seagate 200 GB SATA drive I linked to above is an excellent drive.

Quote:
keyboard mouse : a wireless one would be awesome, so if you can find a cheap one, hook it up, has to be optical! :P
If you want both a wireless keyboard and mouse then i recommend the Logitech Cordless MX Duo without a doubt.

Quote:
montiorm if i can fit it in i want a LCD nice flat screen
The Samsung 172x is about the best gaming LCD you can get.

Quote:
optical drives : no idea, lol
The Asus drives I linked to above are both excellent. It's a 16x dual layer DVD burner along with a plain DVD-ROM. I don't know what else to recommend.

Quote:
operating system : xp home or pro? dont matter one of em :P
Most likely all you need is XP Home. XP Pro is geared for large business networks.

whoa... triple post.... anyways your motherboard and CPU don't match. you need a socket 940 MoBo to fit with that Athlon64 FX. also, i would probably go with getting the normal audigy2 ZS instead of the gamer ed cuz as far as i can tell, the gamer ed only has a few more games bundled with it and i would put the money towards a thermaltake tsunami case. the thermaltake case is aluminum and will dissappate heat better and will be lighter then the steel case. if you don't need a wireless mouse, i would look at the keyboard mouse bundle microsoft has for around 25 dollars.

Good catch their Yuanji. I continue to forget about the sockets on AMD CPU's. THIS is a good socket 940 motherboard. Everything else looks good to me. Though there is no keyboard on the list.

EDIT: A good way to save money would be to go with the Athlon 64 3500 and the Asus A8V Deluxe. It would still be a very fast PC.

Aluminum doesn't dissipate heat...it's just lighter and the case itself has a good air circulation method. If you took a look at inside the cover from the Tsunami, you'll see several vents where air is supposed to flow out - I think it's very well designed. However, case is almost 100% self preference - that wouldn't be to say that the TT Tsunami isn't a viable option, which it definately is. Just get one that appeals to your taste, I would say.

Any case will work. Find one on Newegg that you like. We can't really tell you what you like. It's personal preference. About the sound card, the only difference between the Audigy 2 ZS Gamer Edition and the plain Audigy 2 ZS is that the Gamer Edition comes with several full games (Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Halo, Tomb Raider something, Rainbow Six 3, and Splinter Cell). If you already have or don't want those games then get the plain Augidy 2 ZS.
