I'am making a new pc I have a older Maxtor 7200 ata 40 gig drive I got back in 2001. I think it's ata 66 or 100.
I have never had a problem with this drive it still works great to this day. My question is when I upgrade should I get a sata drive. Is there a big diffrence at the monment that is worth upgrading? I well only be using this pc for gaming if that helps at all. |

When the time does come for you to upgrade or replace your hard drive you might as well go with a SATA one (if your motherboard supports SATA). SATA is going to be replacing PATA (standard IDE) hard drives eventually.

remember that to use sata on a computer that is older ( I assume yours is) your motherboard may not have an onboard sata controller. You may have to buy a pci card with sata connections on it.

Well the new motherboard I'm getting supports SATA. The real thing I'm unsure of is how do SATA drives work with new pc where you are building it from the groud up.
Are they like ata drive where it was easy once it was installed? I thought I saw long ago you had to install some drivers for SATA even before you install Xp. Also I have heard that people have had problems with SATA with a fresh install of xp. Last edited by thulsa; 10-09-2004 at 10:28 PM. |

Yes, they sometimes need drivers installed off of a floppy durning setup when it asks for SCSI/RAID drivers. Otherwise, it's pretty much the same.

it largely depends on whether ur motherboard's chipset natively supports SATA. i know the recent intel chipsets all support native SATA. if they don't the MoBo should come with a driver floppy and you pop it in and press f6 when XP setup prompts you to and everything else should work out fine. don't see much else reason to go SATA besides that sometimes SATA drives are cheaper and also they don't make PATA raptors.
