Yes, you can use either interface or a combination of the two. There is no master/slave with SATA. There is just a primary and secondary connection.

You'll have two IDE connections and two SATA connections. With the IDE, you can have two devices per connection, in slave and master settings. With the SATA you will only have one device per connection. So you can have 6 drives hooked up, like two IDE hdd, two SATA hdd and two optical drives. And assuming that you have the SATA drivers installed, your system should autodetect them.

IDE - 2 drives per channel SATA - 1 drive per connection What board are you looking at that has 5 SATA connections? As far as SATA drives being recognized automatically, they might, might not. On my board I have to manually load the drivers via floppy. My dad just finished a build with an Intel board that recognized them automatically, all you can do is try it and find out. |

What mobo are you using? 5 is a lot, the most I've ever seen is 4 SATA connections. But yes, if you have 5 SATA connections, then you can have 5 devices connected via SATA. Whether that's hdds or optical drives, doesn't matter. And as stated by Spyder, it'll depend on the mobo and system whether or not it recongizes SATA immediately. Mine did, I have an Abit NF7-S2.
