Laptop Question

I recently ordered a monitor to hook up to my laptop. Since there is limited space on my desk, i would like to be able to put my new monitor in my laptop's old spot, and put my laptop below my desk somewhere. Is there a way that i can have my laptop closed and still running. Now, when i close my screen, it automatically goes into hybernation, or sleep mode. I think that this little plastic notch is what automatically turns the computer into sleep mode, so is there anyway (software-wise) to disable this feature (and use the laptop while it is closed), or should i just file off the plastic notch so that it does not go to sleep when closed? Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Look in control panel->Power Options. There is a setting to tell the lappy what to do when the lid is closed. Tell it to do nothing.
