Nero not recognising CDRW drive

I have a Philips CDRW5224 CDRW drive. A problem has arisen since trying to install Nero burning software after I recently installed a new hard drive.

As we have recently moved house, I could not find the original Nero v5.5 CDrom that came with the CDRW unit, so I bought a standalone Nero v5.5 installation CDrom off Ebay.

It appears to install the Nero software okay but, when I open up Nero, it only gives me an Image Recorder device under the Choose Recorder menu, and InCD (the drag-n-drop software) gives an error - I am presuming as they are not recognising my CDRW unit. Nero is also not picking up the blank CDrom in the drive, but instead 5Gb of a (presumably) hard disk image.

I am confused as the CDRW drive is listed in the BIOS and by SiSoft Sandra. Also, I am able to burn CloneCD CDrom images using CloneCD burning software (using CDRW drive, not virtual drive) and so both indicate that the CDRW is working properly.

I have gone inside the case and checked that the cables, etc are inserted correctly and firmly.

Can anyone advise what the problem might be?

Do I simply need the original Nero CDrom that came with the CDRW unit (I think not though)?

Thanks as always for your time and advice! You've always been a great help to me in the past.

Sounds to me like you have bought a copy of Nero that was distributed with a new CD writer and is only useable for that particular model.
Nero is distributed under licence with some new CD writers but it is configured only to work with that make/model.

Thanks for the info.

Assuming this is the case, and I can not find the Nero CDrom that came with my CDRW unit, how do I get round the inflexibility of the Nero software?

It would be a shame if the only solution was to buy a new CDRW unit.

Cheers.

I am reasonably certain that this is your problem, the only thing you can do is buy a new copy of Nero or use another type of software. You could always throw it back at whom ever you bought it off claiming missrepresentation but make sure you read the fine print of the advert first.
What do you want to burn to CD? is data, music, text or what?

Music CDs and data backup CDs.

Re. other software, I have this concern that only certain CDRW makes work with each software type (e.g. some with Roxio, others with Nero, but never both).

I guess my choice now is to have a good look for my original version and, if I can not find it, buy for an original, unrestricted version of the Nero software.

Thanks.

Here's where I got a copy of Nero 6 OEM Suite a while back. Think I paid about $8 at the time. Couple others here at PC Mech bought it too. I've used it with a couple different brands of burners with no trouble. Look a the price now!
