splat Digital camera problems with XP code 38?

I just got a new pc that is running windows XP. Yesterday I plugged in my digital camera and it worked great with XP already having the drivers. Today I [plugged in the camera and it wont work. In the device manager gives me the following as the device status, “Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because a previous instance of the device driver is still in memory. (Code 38)

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device.”

I have repeatedly followed the instructions in trouble shooting and keep ending up with the same error when I am done. Can anyone tell me how to resolve my problem? If it helps I have a canon power shot A60.

Thanks
-Michael I

Did you disable the device before you disconnected the camera? In the system tray by the clock a little icon will appear...green arrow and a grey box I think...before you disconnect the camera you have to right click on this icon and then disable the device so you can disconnect it.

Have you tried rebooting the computer (if you leave yours on 24/7)?

I have tried rebooting many times. If I uninstall the device and reboot as soon as I plug it back in and the pc recognizes it and immediately has the code 38. so I never even have an opportunity to safely disconnect it

Question Camera Trouble

Having the same problem with my camera, but only after I installed SP2. If you figure it out, let me know.

Do you have a usb scanner/printer? Seen on another forum this can cause this issue - the suggested solution is to use a card reader..
