Liquid cooling????
Hi,
Im just wondering what this liquid cooling is. http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...106-040&depa=0 I really like to oc my computer and my athlon 2600+ just doesnt seem to wana oc without overheating. It was 1.9ghz when i bought it and i overclocked it to 2ghz and it still gets sorta hot. 55degreesC durring games. Ive looked into getting a new heatsink and stuff but most people say they only get like a 5degreesC drop. Im not quite sure what this liquid cooling is but i think i really might like it. I also like to oc my memory a lot. Im pretty sure if i had the right cooling stuff, i could oc my athlon 2600+ to 2.4ghz. What do you guys think? |

Way too much money... You can upgrade your processor for that kind of cash.

that wasnt my question. can anyone else answer my question? The reason i wana do this is because im kinda havin a contest with my friend at work on who can overclock an athlon 2600+ more and it has to stay under 50degrees celcius under a full load. Im gona get a thermalright heatsink and a thermaltake volcano 90mm fan to go with it. knowing my friend, he is gona pull somethin outa his butt so i gotta top it off. My question is, what is liquid cooling and what benifits will i get from it?

There's multiple ways to cool you cpu. Most of us use air cooling, which is the heatsink and fan. Liquid cooling is the next step. It's usually pretty expensive, but it get s your cpu down a bit below ambient room temp. Liquid cooling is exactly what it says: it uses a pump, resevoir, radiateor, and all kinds of tubing to move cool liquid (typically water) to a waterblock that sits ontop of your cpu. The cool water absorbs the heat and moves on to be cooled again in the radiator where the heat is disapated.
I wouldn't bother with liquid cooling if I were you. That tends to be for the hardcore OCers. Just get a really nice Thermaltake hsf, add some fans, and (most importantly) do some cable management in your case to help airflow. And 55C for an Athlon is nothing to worry about. I'm almost always between 50-55C with my 3200+, but I'm folding fulltime. |

liquid cooling is basically when you use liquid to take away the heat fromt the CPU like a normal heatsink material would. the benefits to liquid cooling i think are that water transfers heat better and then the water is cooled down by an external source. its usually eyecandy. now LN2 cooling, that's where its at

depends on other hardware but if you were facing temp problems and your CPU, RAM, and Motherboard allowed you to OC that far, yes liquid cooling would let you make it run cooler

well another friend of mine is kinda messed with the bios and was able to make it so im able to oc it all the way to 2.65ghz which is like.... wow for an athlon. Im not sure there is any cooling system out there that would support an oc that huge though.

Well, except like Yuanji said Liquid Nitrogen......hehe could easily handle that load but may be a bit over the top lol

what kind of 2600+ do you have? Thoroughbred? Barton? Mobile? one thing i know....the chance finding a desktop chip that does 2650MHz on air is slim to none. air-cooling is the cheapest way you can go....my OC is on air, and i load at about 49C. water is good, but dont rule out quality air cooling. if you want to get into watercooling, its better to build your own system....built to your specs with the parts you want, just like your computer. home brew or dell? home brew or aquarius? theres an interesting link in my sig for you...itll kind of give you an idea of what it takes to get 2650MHz

well i currently have a custom build. Im usin the thermaltake tsunami and stock heatsink so i really cant oc very much. My case tends to stay around room temp and usualy only gets around 1-2 degrees higher than room temp. My case has pretty good air flow so i dont think that is a problem. Im just wondering, why are some heatsinks so much better at keeping systems cooler and why do they work so much better? Some of the other heatsinks like thermalright have these 2 bent pin things. i have no idea how those work. can anyone explain to me how you install those? others have like 4 levers that go down and clasp down pretty tight so they are hard to remove. I see those in thermaltake heatsinks. Im not 100% sure how to install those ones either. Mine has 2 clasps. one on 2 of the sides. so 2 sides have 1xclip on them and 2 sides have no clips on them.

One other way is simply to place a piece of dry ice on the CPU heatsink. It is cheapr and simple and should work better than water cooling, You just have to watch and replace the dry ice.
Also, you can get these solid state coolers. They use only electricity, but can cool down pretty good. |

To Tim Canary: Dang! Your CPU is better than an FX-53! Wow! I think I'll go athlon xp next time....

i dunno bout being better then a FX-53 but it sure looks nice. those are synthetic benchies. hey Tin how well does your CPU run under real life conditions?
