AMD and nForce 4 questions
Some quick questions my fellow forum members:
1. Are AMD 64 processors compatible with ddr2 memory yet? 2. Are AMD 64 processors compatible with PCI-Xpress yet? 3. Is the nForce4 chipset allow agp cards as well as pci xpress cards? 4. Can agp cards be linked up with sli? 5. Is it better to buy the pci express version of a 6800 ultra or 6600 gt to its agp counterpart? Thanks all! |

currently, the AGP8X hasn't been bottlenecked by any of the cards yet. it is just a push forward in technology beyond what has already been reached in my opinion for marketing reasons. AGP cards will not be supported for the Nforce4 boards and you cannot physically link 2 AGP cards in SLi because they are missing the bridge interface. after doing some research, it seems that Nforce4 does not support DDR2
lower prices

1. nope. amd decided that they won't be supporting it due to high cost and crappy latency. it's not till recently did intel started using the potential of ddr2 memory. amd might jump on the bandwagon, but not anytime soon.
2. nforce4 should come out within the next 2 weeks. 3. (i think) pci-e isn't backward compatible w/ agp. 4. nope =) 5. like what yuanji said, right now the gfx cards aren't even using up the bandwidth agp8x provides, so the performance of pci-e cards should be on par (maybe a tad faster) than its agp counterparts. |

I believe Nvidia's SLI will only support PCI-Express.
PCI-Express and AGP are two different things, they are not compatible with each other.

SLI is Nvidia's new technology that will support two PCI-Express vidocards on the motherboard. Each videocard will render half the image on the screen.

most recent news i've heard on actually being able to get a hold of nforce 4 boards is that msi and asus will both have boards out for christmas (incidentally, all of the demo boards being tested currently are msi and asus i believe).
i would buy the pci-e version if you are completely rebuilding, just for upgrade potential.... 6 months down the road, pop another, much cheaper pci-e 6800 or 6600gt in there, and get a nice performance boost... but that's just my opinion...
