Dodge: Yes, I hear the drive.

wedor: Yes, when I go to BIOS, it has it as Primary Master.

Well then you do not have an electronics problem and a recovery program should be able to find your data.

Put the recovery program on a floppy and let it look at the drive.

GetDataBack is a program that you install on a working computer, then moving the bad drive to the working computer.

I downloaded the Media Tools Professional trial, but I can't seem to get it in a Floppy. I says something weird.

I have to say it again... I think at this point having a computer store tech test it would be the best thing to do. You'll know the situation and they have the recovery programs, electroncs testers and such. The worst you can do is try things when you don't know what all is occurring and such.

I've never used it so I did not know that.

MTA requires you to register it with them to use it IIRC.

To be specific, when it is at 1%, is says:

Disk error on track 0, head 1
Error in reading

When I click IGNORE it works. Should I just IGNORE it?

Yes, try the recovery program.

Wedor, what happened to me is the drive would spin to speed, but the electronics for the read/write had failed. I am hoping it is that simple in this case, or just a matter of using a data recovery program.

Then another one comes.

then track 5, head 0

the track 6, head 0.... keeps going...

What other recovery programs are there that uses Floppy and can actually make the Floppy without registering?

That is not a registration error, that is telling you the drive has mechanical problems.

You just said that the Floppy has a mechanical problem. Floppy = drive?

No, I was thinking that you had already loaded the MTA program on a floppy and were using ti to look at the drive, I didn't know you were having problems getting it on a floppy in the first place.

Try a different disk.

Dodge, an electronics issue would generally not allow the drive to be seen by the system but could easily spin up.

I put in another disk and it's working now. When it is done, I will try to put it in the dead comp. Thanks. I will post as soon as I try. Stick around wedor and Dodge.

What I did so far was detected the drive, went to File Recovery Tree, now I am doing the System Components Search. It'll be a while until it is done.

Seagate U-Series 120GB 5400RPM is the broken one...

Seagate Barragate 200GB 7200RPM is the new one...

Not sure about exact model names.

Sounds like you are in good shape so far, MTP is a bit cryptic in its instructions but the best recovery program I have used so far.

It is also somewhat pricey because you can only buy multi-disk versions, the price is not actually bad per disk but if you have to buy a 25 disk version and only need one it gets a bit silly.

wedor: So far, it found some hundreds of directories, and files... Is that good? Does it mean I can back them up?

Also, I just found out you can format drives with MTP. I think I will format the chaos causing drive with it. The 200GB one...

I did not notice anyone mention that if that supposedly faulty drive was formatted NTFS then that would be why dos boot floppy could not read the files on there.
