Moving Old Slave drive to new PC
I recently built a new PC and want to move the slave drive from my old system into my new system. I thought I could just plug it in and be able to read the data, but when I plugged it in the new machine it kept asking if I wanted to format the drive.
I have read some similar threads but not quite what I am experiencing. Old machine is using win 98-SE and the drive is WD 80 GB IDE drive being used as a slave drive. The new machine is using XP Pro with a SATA drive as my primary drive. My IDE uses are listed in the BIOS as: Primary not used (want to use it for the drive in question) Second: DVD-RW as master and DVD-Rom as slave Third: SATA drive Fourth: not used I have two questions: I set used drive as master on the primary IDE. Is this correct? and In one of the other threads it talked about Win 98 drives being FAT and XP as being NTFS. What is the difference and how do I find out what mine are set to? Sorry for the long post, but I've been trying to resolve this for a week now. |

I thought that it could also. So why is it asking me do I want to format the drive?

If you are using an 80 wire IDE cable try setting the hard drive jumper to CS (cable select) instead of master. Win XP can be formatted in and read either FAT32 or NTFS. NTFS is recommended over FAT32 for many reasons. Conversely, Win 98se which runs in FAT32, cannot see any other systems running NTFS.
I'm not positive on the drive jumpering being a fix, but it's worth a try. |

Thanks.
If I understand what I've read elsewhere, I am using an 80 wire IDE cable. The cable came with the ASUS P4P800-E deluxe mobo and has blue, black and gray connectors. I will remove the master jumper. Does it matter which connector on the IDE cable I use (middle or end)? |

Cable position determines how the drive is recognized. Master on the end (black), slave in the middle (gray). Blue connector goes on the mobo (obviously).
One other thought. Check the boot order and make sure your SATA drive with the OS installed is listed before any other hard drives. |

If it's a WD drive and it's the only drive on the cable, put it on the black end and use either Cable Select or remove the jumper. WD's cannot be jumpered to Master unless there is a slave present.

Thanks. It will be the only drive on the cable.

Thanks to all. You guys are awesome.
Once I removed the Master jumper and left the CS jumper in place the system recognized it, but tried to use it as the boot drive. Went into the Bios as Panama Red suggested and changed the boot order. Everything is up and running great and all my files are there. Thanks again. |

Aha! If you had BOTH jumpers set, you had it in the "alternate" configuration, which will limit it to 32gb - and if the drive is already partitioned and formatted to all 80gb, it will not be accessible.

GLC. That seemed to be the problem. From reading the link you sent me it seems that it is only a problem with Windows NT/2000/XP. So I did not have a problem on my Win 98SE machine (jumpers were set to slave and CS). Anyway, everything is working great now. I appreciate all of your and Panama Red's help. If I hang out here long enough I may actually learn something. LOL.

Can I ask one more question here or should this be a new thread. After putting in the latest drive. My drive letters are assigned like this:
c: Sata D: DVD-RW E: DVD F: 2nd hard drive How do I change these so that it is C: Sata D: 2nd hard drive E: DVD-RW F: DVD? Last edited by chuchie; 11-07-2004 at 12:56 PM. Reason: Error |

Change one drive at a time in Disk Management. Change the DVD-RW to something like Z, change the 2nd hard drive to D, change the DVD to something like Y, change the DVD-RW to E, then the DVD to F.

Once again, Thanks. Worked like a charm. I knew it was possible but didn't know where to go.
