Xbox Modding
I have been away for awhile from the site, so if this is the wrong place I appologize. Call it a hunch but I bet the wife is getting me a Xbox with a Mod chip. I am looking ahead of time to get as much info as I can without overwhelming myself. While I am very technically knowledgable, some of the Xbox terms I don't have a clue what they are talking about. I found a "Hacking a Xbox" book on Amazon w/great reviews, and tons of forums for Xbox. Is anybody into this? From what I am reading Microsoft made it basically to function as a PC.

This is probably not a good topic to be discussing here. Modding an X-box suggests you will be using illegal burned copies of games. I guess it would be legal to do if you own the original copy though. By the way, I know that if you have one of the brand new Xbox's you better be an expert solderer to do this. I never did this myself, but I have a friend who modded his Xbox and he loves to solder and was complaining on how difficult it was. I believe it took him 5 hours to do it. If you have an older model of an Xbox it won't be as difficult.

I have a working modded xbox and its... AWESOME! You can run Linux on it, (and though I'm not advocating it) copy games and DVD's to your hard drive, run emulators, and a whole bunch of other goodies.
I'm not familiar with soldering so I didn't dare do it on my own. If you're not an expert I recommend a website called BMMODS.com. They have very reasonable prices and will even install a bigger hard drive and include a disc with the hacked BIOS on it. You pay them through PAYPAL and then ship your xbox to them. They'll return it in about 2 weeks. I highly recommend doing this. |

Its real easy to do yourself, I modded my xbox and thought the soldering was fairly easy compared to modding a ps2. I also put in an extra 80 gig hitachi hdd i had. I just rip games onto the hdd and it works great, dont need to carry around a bunch of games and the load times are much shorter. I recommend reading some guides at xbox-scene.com. You can get evox or avalanche ( xbox dashboards, sorta like an OS for your xbox) off mirc or torrent. You will need a dashboard to rip games and use other utilitys like the xbox media player.
