greedo high temps... not helped by basic motherboard ?

Hi guy's...

what started off as a simple upgrade 6 months ago has mutated into a major replacement of all my components.

Where I am just now is...

ASRock P4VT8+ Motherboard
3.0Ghz Pentium 4 Prescott
1Gb DDR Ram
9800 Radeon Pro Graphics
dual fan 400Wt PSU
three fans
artic cooler cpu fan

My currrent problem is the heat of my pc. In general my cpu runs about 74 degrees celcius and while I can run my pc, I can only play games for about 30 minutes before it crashes (due to heat I am presuming)

My current thinking is that the cheap motherboard I bought now cannot cope with new cpu (used to have 2.3Ghz celeron), etc and I need a superior board to handle everything. The problem is however, I don't want to splash a tonne on a new board if it's likely the cpu will remain the same heat.

I have checked all my bits are compatible and checked most things like turning fans around, making sure cpu & fan are ok and pasted up (but not too much) etc.

If anyone has any thoughts... they sure would be appreciated

Thanks
Gordon

Prescotts are known to have heat problems, you need to get a pretty good heatskink to keep em cool...and even then they are pretty hot. Look at some heatsinks from thermalright and that should solve your heat issue. You could try re-applying the thermal paste if you applied it yourself, but without a good heatsink it will keep overheating.

Here are some thermalright heatsinks,

Replacing the CPU hsf on a retail Intel chip will void the warrantly. I like the £13.50 Thermalright on this page: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatal...right_120.html You will need a 92 mm fan on it, for maxium cooling/minimum noise, and overclockers.co.uk is reputable, I see them mentioned in magazines a lot, and have heard good things about it.

gstonian,

On the thermalright website it tells you the sites that sell there coolers,

http://thermalright.com/where_default.htm

Now if you go with a good thermalright cooler i guarantee it will cool great and keep your temps down, as for other makers im not sure so its kind of a gamble. As far as ive seen thermaright makes the best hsf's.

there should be no reason that a prescott would run that hot with stock. you might try checking to see if you placed the heat sink is connected properly. if it is correclty applied, you should be only seeing idle temps of 50-60

Thought I'd post again to let you know how I got on....

I bought the zalman fan (above) and the temperature went down from 77 to 44 degrees. It works beautifully now - thanks for all your advice. I didn't realise that fans came in so many wonderful models and sizes

Thanks again to all who posted to this thread !
