Prescott's power requirements

[FONT=Arial Black]
Do Presott cpus need minimum 350W SMPS ?
If so why the high power reqs?

Also how many Molex connectors do I get in 300W SMPS..is it that more Watts=more Molex connectors?

The prescott does not require 350w to operate. the power requirements I believe is around 37 watts. I believe what you are thinking of is the powersupply. Depending on you mother board anbd additional components that dictates your psu wattage. It is always good to have more than you need in reserve and future component additions and changes. Also the cpu gets its power from the motherboard not through a molex connector.

T he number of molex connectors is usually between 5 and 7. And the size of the supply doesn't dictate the number of connectors.

37 watts? Where'd you get that number? Even the first William P4 used over 48 watts and the faster Prescotts are said to use over 100 watts already.

The number of molex connections depends on the quality of the power supply itself, not the amount of watts it puts out. I've seen many cheap power supplies with only 4 molex connectors...doesn't matter if it puts out 200 watts or 500 watts. Good quality power supplies will have more molex connectors available. I have a 235 watt Sparkle Power PSU that has 5 molex connectors and my 350 watt Sparkle Power has 7 molex connectors.

One thing that will determine your power needs is the video card. Many high powered gaming video cards will state that a power supply of 400 watts or more is required.

Hi Cricket,

Wow if its over 100W ( we used 2.4GHz 533FSB) then surely they need much more than 300W SMPS...thats a normal one in computer systems in india.

Actually here we get a special case(power supply included)..from Mercury/Kobian..its got a chimney(kindof a round plastic pipe that almost covers the processor and a side vent at the other end that throws out the heat out of the case)..the case hada 350W power supply rather than regular 300W.

OK another doubt i have is with the number of Molex connectors that come with it..whts the equation..isnt it that more wattage equals more Molex connectors?

thnks

Not necessarily. Low quality power supplies don't always give you more connectors as the wattage rating goes up. Like I said, I've seen low quality 400 watt power supplies with just 4 molex connectors. In good quality power supplies you do get more connectors as the wattage rating goes up. The most I've seen is 7 connectors, but I haven't used anything over 400 watts yet.
