Modding/Selling?
I have a cheap PowMax case that I used before I bought my current one. I don't like how it looks but I had an idea. Would it be feasible to mod the case and make it look really nice and then sell it for a profit? Would anyone buy it? Is it a waist of time? I'm thinking I could paint it, add a window, install LED's, etc. Would it be feasible at all to buy cheap cases, make them pretty, and sell them?

i would think that any one buying a modded case would want the mechanical options of higher end cases like screwless covers, quick release drives, lots of drive bays, front USB ports, etc. Putting a new paint job on a '76 Pinto; you got a '76 Pinto with nice paint.

I would do more than simply paint it. I would cut out restrictive fan grills, reinforce any flimsy parts, add things like good fans, etc. Personally I prefer screws to any of the screwless systems I've come accross but that's just me.

depends on a lot of things...
if you think you have a local market then it might be feasible... shipping is what usually kills even the sweetest monitor or case deal... sometimes that type of thing can be good for E-Bay... you also have to be sure you can do it well and for less than the local computer shop... like the Tuttle's theme bikes... you could also customize to order... little kids that want hotwheels or barbie cases... someones girlfriend wants a pink case to match her room... lol... whatever find a good base case to work with and you could do it... Its actually something Ive toyed with doing myself.. however so far its been on a limited scale... you could use some of the cheaper models from Amamax to work with... maybe pick up some good deals on plain jane PSU's and mod them as well... Heres some links for some possible candidates... http://store.yahoo.com/amamax/spivatxmidto.html http://store.yahoo.com/amamax/blatatxmicaw2.html http://store.yahoo.com/amamax/poxcbl72atxm.html http://store.yahoo.com/amamax/csmina161blackmecca.html http://store.yahoo.com/amamax/poxcsi73atxg1.html ------------ you can often find some AMAZING deals on high end PSU's at NewEgg's refurbished section, get a few sleeving kits cheap from SVC and some CCFL's and LED fans, and your set.... the rest is modding fun..lol Last edited by JPMiller; 11-12-2004 at 10:23 PM. |

Mate, it's a matter of giving people what they want... one road you can travel is to make cases to order, and then make occasional 'demo' cases to show your flair and talent and bring the punters in to show them what they could potentially have.
Start doing it for friends and family, and ask them to spread the word by word of mouth, you'd be surprised how many people who know nothing about computers would pay say $50 or so for a nice case, just because they can and someone has recommended it to them. |
