Question Replacement motherboard help...

I have two computers (three if you count my work laptop). They both have decided to take a dump at about the same time. I want to combine the two to make one but I need a little help picking out a motherboard since I have not kept up with what is available over the last couple of years. The oldest computer (and the last one I built) contains a 64 MB AGP GeForce video card, SoundBlaster Audigy sound card, Asus A7V motherboard, AMD 1000 Tbird cpu. The cpu in this computer is bad. My wife's computer is a HP Pavilion A405 with a MSI MS-6577 Rev 3.1 micro ATX motherboard with on board audio and video, and a 2.7 celeron cpu, 7 in 1 memory card reader and audio ports in the front of the case. The motherboard is bad in this computer. What I would like to do is resurrect the HP computer since it was alot faster than the old one with a new motherboard. I would like to use the AGP video card and Audigy sound card from the old computer. The front panel audio ports are not used so they are not important. I tried e-mailing MSI since they made the motherboard for HP but so far no answers. Money is a little tight since Christmas is coming so I can't afford to start over right now. I can provide a link to the motherboard specs on the HP website if it would help. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated...

The laptop is a PIII-M 750 but I can not go there anyway. I have to have it for work. The HP board seems to be a non supported MSI board since they will not respond to my e-mails. The board is stamped MSI and MS-6577 Rev. 3.1. HP tells me to take the computer back where I bought it. The motherboard specs can be found at http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/g...name=c00063244 if anyone wants to see the specs. What I want to reuse is: case, 2.7 gig Celeron cpu (until I can afford a p4), RAM (2 512 MB sticks of PC2700U DDR 333Mhz CL2.5), drives (Baracuda 7200.7 80 gig, DVD writer, CD RW) with fancy round cables, AGP video card (I will go with on board if I HAVE to), Audigy sound card (I will use on board sound if I have to), 7 in 1 card reader (I have to, just ask the wife), 300 watt power supply (I have already replaced it in the HP and it has the 4 pin plug in). Does that help?

Well the info on these things is almost non existant...
If your going to be able to use that case, it will be a MicroATX board.
You could very well be looking at a mobo, case and power supply replacement.
you may be able to get away with using the old PSU, but I'd hesitate to suggest it... it will also depend if its a standard ATX plug...
Here are my budget suggestions...
ASUS refurb from Newegg = $31 shipped
MidTower Case from Amamax = $24
Fortron 300W Power Supply = $23 (just enough to power what you have...)
or for a few dollars more..
Thermaltake 420W refurb = $30
Your other issue will then be your OS... most prebuilts come with only a restore disk, this cant be used with the new motherboard... now if your lucky you may be able to boot and be able to install the drivers for the new chipset... or it may not boot at all...
If you have an XP or whatever OS your using, disk, you may be able to do a repair install to fix it...
What Os are you using and do you know anyone with a true version of it on disk?

I am not worried so much about a cheap motherboard, I just can not afford all new RAM, cpu, etc. A motherboard would not be too bad. I have the WinXP Pro disc so the OS will not be a problem. The power supply is ATX compliant and is supposed to be compatible with the new P4 cpu's. Thanks for the replies so far. I do appreciate the assistance...

Wll if the power supply truly is standard, then it will be up to the standoff configuration of your case.. that will be hard to know until you get the new board..
can you take the side off and take good pictures to post?

Here's what I would do. (hopefully I read you correctly) I know JP likes refurb motherboards, but I'm going to recommend you buy retail so you get the installation CD with all the drivers as well as and I/O shield and cables. I use this Asus motherboard for all my budget builds.

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...131-460&depa=0

It will support your Celeron, memory and power supply with onboard 6 channel audio, video and lan and SATA support. It comes with SATA cables in the retail box. It has extra USB support for your card reader as well as any USB's in the front of a case. It has an AGP slot for addition of a better video card later if you like and it will support a P4 Northwood or Prescott with 800 fsb for future upgrade. Has Dual channel memory support too. Your power supply needs to be a good qualtiy one. If it's not on the "good" list in the psu thread, I'd go with a 350Watt unit. That will allow support for a 9800Pro AGP card in the future. If you plan on a new case too, look at the Antec ones at UpgradeSource.com. They come with a psu and are warranteed for 3 years. Prices there are competitive and they ship freight free.

Thanks Panama. I appreciate the assistance. Here is what I was thinking of reusing to build the new build:
Mid tower case (computer one)
Celeron 2.7 cpu (computer two)
RAM (2 - 512 MB DDR PC2700 modules (computer two)
300 watt PSU (computer two - top of the line @ Best Buy)
GeForce 4 128 MB 4X AGP video card (computer one)
US Robotics 56K V.92 modem (computer one)
Seagate 7200.7 40 & 80 gig hard drive (both - one for back up use)
DVD ROM and Rewriter drives (both)
Card reader
I have decided to go with a ATX board since there are more options and the card reader just uses a USB header and not a special header. Serial ATA does not have to be on the board since I do not want to upgrade my drives just to use SATA. On board LAN would be nice but not requires. Any more ideas?!?!

I'd still recommend that same board. You're only giving up 2 PCI slots and you only plan to occupy 1 with the modem. You'll still have two for later if you want a different sound card or whatever. I wouldn't even use the GeForce vid card. The onboard is equal or better to that card. Buy a 9800 Pro if you want to add a good vid card, about $200. The SATA is just an option, not a requirement. It still supports two IDE channels for your 4 drives. The extra USB headers will be ideal to handle the card reader as well as case-front usb ports. I don't think you can find a better mobo for the money.
